Turns out Zhang Yimou's The Great Wall isn't quite the trainwreck it has the repuation for being

Cheesy CGI, cheesy action sequences and story. Everything was just really cheese.

The CGI was not good, so I certainly understand that criticism.

But as for the story, I guess sometimes I like cheesy narratives. That doesn't mean it's bad, it's just not to your taste.

It was bad, but not transformers bad.

Though I cannot believe you like "Gods" either. Did you enjoy world of Warcraft too?

I really did like Gods. I guess sometimes I feel like I see things in films that others don't seem to. I can't explain it, but Gods is one of those films.

Whether we're talking about The Crow or Dark City or Knowing, Alex Proyas is always a man of vision and I don't think that ended with Gods of Egypt.

As for World of Warcraft? Didn't watch.

No, I believe you. Just saying how weird that was to me.

Maybe you just like things that others don't? Maybe we just saw it for what it actually was? Either way, if you like it, then enjoy. Takes all different kinds...

Yeah, you ain't missing shit. It was a turd.

Well, sometimes. I mean, I also like Drive and Jurassic Park. A lot of people seemed to like those films.

It's all subjective at the end of the day.

But what I would encourage people to do is try to not just concentrate on their surface experience but to see the details.

For instance, take the set of the great hall in The Great Wall. Look at the attention to detail.

Look at the costuming.

Pay attention to the fact that, while Yimou could've used CGI to produce his massive horde of soldiers--as MOST directors today would've done--he instead employed hundreds of extras.

These things matter and they add to the film.

Break it down for me. Tell me what exactly was so bad about it.
The white savior thing is kind of awkward, but a lot of films are watchable despite of that. What it comes down to is how flat the whole movie is, from its main characters to the supporting cast, all the way to the writing. The plot is moved along with tireless action tropes, including the stupid plot device as to how they'd finish off the beasts once and for all.
By the flatness of the characters, I mean that none of them offered any sort of dramatic tension. Damon probably had the most complex character, and even his didn't have more than a dimension or two. But the rest are replaceable, simply there to move the minimal character growth along in Damon's character. Pascal's character was funny though, I'll say that. And what should have been the most interesting relationship of them all, Tian's and Damon's character had ZERO CHEMISTRY. There was no charisma in the film beyond Pascal having a funny line or there. It didn't feel like an organic story; the clunkiness of it all pulled you out of this mythological world that should have been fun to jump into.
Now, it's not the acting's fault. The writing was bad. Like, hard to believe folks who had english as their first language bad. It was a mix of movie tropes (dramatic one liners) and some modern interpretation of how ancient folks spoke, concluding in some unrealistic dialogue and plot developments that simply felt forced.
Now, the few big actions scenes are actually glorious. It's the action that provides the playfulness to trudge through the film, but it should have been some characters and some world building that kept you interested.
The closest competition to the film was Warcraft, and while it is a deeply flawed film, it does a better job of sucking you into the world it's trying to build (despite throwing too much bullshit in there and not exploring enough some really interesting characters). Or a Del Torro films like Hellboy or Pacific Rim, which have you buying into the gravity of the situation, but you actually have a good time because the characters are relatable and the myths are provided in a way that them compelling.

I'm a bigger sucker for a bad action movie than most, but you have to create action scenes that fit the plot, or dare I say, move it. it felt like they had action scenes planned, and then created a story around it, which is how I assume a porn script is written.

I understand for some movies CGI is really necessary, but I think certain movies would have been way better had that not used so much of it if any at all... I am Legend really comes to mind...great story, but imagine if the deformed humans weren't all CGI...I think that movie would have been a lot better had they used real people in make up instead

This I thought that CGI zombies was a bad idea would've been without it
even better if Will Smith wasn't in it either.
