Most people don't know that the Skinhead culture started not in Europe,
but in Jamaica in the sixties by originators of Ska/Rocksteady. It had no
racist connotations or principles of prejudice whatsoever, until it was
brought over by Jamaicans who moved to the UK and brought the style
along with them. After the assimilation of cultures, it broke into two sects,
Nazi Skins and SHARP skins [skinheads against racial prejudice] Both
of whom who largely drew cultural and stylistic influence from their
Jamaican predecessors. This is a thread about the appreciation of
these pioneers and the influences they had on later generations of reggae
such as the great Bob Marley. This IS NOT a thread about the third wave
of SKA, which imo, may as well be a totally different genre. ::queue the
smart ass Reel Big Fish fans who don't want to start their own thread::
Their songs were typically about love, strength, unity, fighting, heartbreak,
a poor judicial system, police violence and oppression as well as living a
life in a very volatile Kingston, Jamaica. It's no wonder it's a heavy influence
on punk culture, especially that of England in the seventies.
It's perhaps my favorite genre, and is no doubt the genre that I find to
be most consistent in terms of quality, danceability, and style. Imo, it's by
far the coolest sub culture/style of music. [With an honorable mention to
Rockabilly, B Boys and Punks] Without further adu... here's some of my
favorites. Feel free to post yours.
One of my all time favorite songs across all genres:
