There is a myth that Trump was elected by angry white men. That myth is not supported by the facts. Hillary lost this election because black voters who came out for Obama either stayed home or voted for Trump. This is by far the most significant factor in determining the 2016 outcome:
Total vote 2012, 129,085,410. 72% white 13% black. Total vote 2016, 127,413,593. 70% white 12% black.
Republican white vote:
Romney had 59% of the white vote, of 92,941,495 white voters, that's 54,835,482 white voters for Romney.
Trump had 58% of the white vote, of 89,189,515 white voters, that's 51,729,918 white voters for Trump.
Republican black vote:
Romney had 6% of the black vote, of 16,781,103 black voters, that's 1,006,866 black voters for Romney.
Trump had 8% of the black vote, of 15,289,631 black voters, that's 1,223,170 black voters for Trump.
Democratic black vote
Obama had 93% of the black vote, of 16,781,103 black voters, that's 15,606,425 black voters for Obama.
Hillary had 88% of the black vote, of 15,289,631 black voters, that's 13,454,875 black voters for Hillary.
Over 2 million black voters who came out for Obama stayed home for Hillary and some switched their vote to Trump. Black people elected Trump.
