UPDATE: WASHINGTON (AP) — South Korea's national security director says President Donald Trump has decided he will meet with North Korea's Kim Jong Un "by May."

Chung Eui-yong spoke outside the White House after a day of briefings with senior U.S. officials, including Trump, on the recent inter-Korea talks. Chung says Trump said "he would meet Kim Jong Un by May to achieve permanent denuclearization" of the Korean peninsula.

Chung says Kim told the South Koreans he is "committed to denuclearization" and pledged that "North Korea will refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests."

The meeting would be the first of its kind between a leader of North Korea and a sitting president of the United States. The two countries have been in a formal state of war since the Korean War in the 1950s.

Shit thread, I know, but still not a lot of sources.

Six months of Twitter trolling>25 years of diplomacy

What a time to be alive.

Will meet by May. Will be interesting to see where. I don't think Kim leaves NK and don't think there is any way Trump is allowed into NK by US for security purposes.

Will be interesting to see what deal, if any, comes from it. What does Trump give up to get the "win" for NK to give up nuke ambitions. It just won't be sanctions lifted, KJU is talking about "guaranteed security" - does that mean US leaves SK bases?

Russia wants a natural gas pipeline through NK to the south. China wants US military out of the KP to further expand their influence in the area.

NK will never give up their nukes , any one who thinks they will is extremely gullible .

Maybe that "twitter trolling" scared SK into negotiating with NK, scared Trump might preemptively bomb NK and then have NK bomb Seoul into the stone age killing millions.

They only ever wanted them defensively - if they can get "guaranteed security" they're asking for in any deal - I could see them doing it. A Russian natural gas pipeline through NK that would happen would mean high level of Russian interest in making sure nothing happened to that resource in the future.

Regardless of what comes of this (I am hopeful for something good), this can only be seen as a win for Trump.

Trump held a press conference to say he wants credit for an announcement south Korea was making tonight. If he actually succeeds in solving this problem I will give him all the credit in the world.

Trump could end up like Nixon; hated in his time but rehabilitated by historians as a great diplomat. "Only Trump could go to NK..."

This would be a miraculous turnaround.

I'll toss some credit to our Chief in Command if that happens fo shore.

un wants himself some pornstars. He knows where to ask.

I'm torn between my desire for the situation to be resolved and my desire to see these two get into a slap fight.

I agree with this in principle. It offers legitimacy to North Korea and shows that the United States recognizes them as a country.

However, I don't think anything profound will come of this, and they certainly won't disarm.

Either way, good for Trump.

15 months in and President Trump almost has the entire Korean peninsula problem wrapped up.

Best President of the 21st century by far.

Unbelievable. Honestly, how in the fucking hell did this happen? Why didn't he want to meet with Obama? Obama was far more reasonable than Trump. This whole thing stinks and I smell Russians pulling the strings behind the scenes. Mueller needs to stop stalling and get the whole administration locked up before this can happen.
