Trump imposes Solar Panel Tariff

Tariffs can give a helping hand, till our industry gets geared up.
This is a strategic industry; we can't afford to let China dominate it.

It doesn't give us a helping hand. The solar installation business, which is local (and fairly labor-intensive) is going to lose customers. It's not going to create new production jobs. I understand the thinking, but it's wrong.

I was critical of the Saudis and their attempts to destroy our shale oil industry

Yet still no duties levied, i wonder why $$$.

SK was rather protectionist for decades, and they still are more protectionist than us. Just like China and Japan. The US is more open than these countries.

No they are not, they are part of the WTO and they have a FTA with the USA and China and they have a trade surplus with China still.

The article in the OP says China is the major source. Below from Vox also says the same thing.

Again with this flawed logic.

People arent going to put solar panels on their roofs as long as they get it cheap from the utilities.

A tariff alone will simply obliterate the industry, which is most likely what these cronies want.

The German Solar industry died because of cheap chinese imports.

After Trump tariffs, Chinese solar company says it will build U.S. factory
A week after the Trump administration unveiled tariffs of up to 30% on imports of solar panels, one of China's biggest manufacturers announced that it plans to open a new plant in the U.S.

JinkoSolar said in a statement Monday that its board of directors had given the go-ahead to "finalize planning for the construction of an advanced solar manufacturing facility in the U.S."

The statement suggested Jinko's decision was tied to the new tariffs, saying that the company "continues to closely monitor treatment of imports of solar cells and modules under the U.S. trade laws."

How many times can the same people be wrong

Is it supposed to work like this? Gotta keep the Koch brothers happy, I guess...

"SunPower Corp., a San Jose, California-based company that makes high-efficiency solar panels mostly in Mexico and the Philippines, announced late Thursday that it will hold off on a $20 million factory expansion that would employ hundreds of people in the United States unless it is exempted from the Trump regime’s 30 percent tariff on solar cells and solar panels."

Koch brothers hate tariffs

This will hurt residential solar installation much more than farms.

Panels make up 30% of the cost of a solar farm so 9% increase in total construction costs if all panels are Chinese. No where near enough to make new coal plants viable.

Mixed feelings. On one hand he clearly recognised the growth potential of solar. On the other this will delay the take up in the states leading to less energy security.

Lastly I don't think you can accuse china of dumping so we are one step closer to a trade war.

Again, will solar capacity increase or decrease with these tariffs?

Solar installation barely make financial sense as is. Now, without cheap panels it doesn't make sense from a financial point of view.

Does the united states need to that badly produce its own solar panels?

If this is about national secruty somehow, why not prop up the u.s. steel industry which has been dying because of cheap underpriced chinese steel.

Solar makes perfect sense. What do you mean?

It doesn't seem like installation is a big part of their business. Why would this be a negative for them?

Because they clearly have outsourced part of their production elsewhere?
