Trump imposes Solar Panel Tariff

It means we need to make these HERE.

Not in China. Not in India.

HERE.

Tarrifs need to be imposed on every fucking tech industry. Phones...cars...dishwashers.

everything.

I think they only reason they don't do that is b/c we use ours mainly as a reserve

besides we get the largest portion of our oil from Canada anyhoo

That was before the shale revolution, the US has enough fossil fuel reserves to burn until the planet becomes unsuitable for life.

And the same applies to Canada, why not put tariffs on Canadian oil when American shale producers were failing left and right?

Or simply not make them at all and focus on natural gas and coal like God intended. 'Murica Bless.

we have NAFTA, can we even do that?

lol at tariffs. Thats so artificial. I wonder if US companies are ashamed that they need help from the GOVT to be competitive.

It makes sense when your competition doesn't have to abide by the same regulations. It's merely levelling the playing field.

its not though. Its still artificial. Regulations are in itself artificial.

Great news, I expect solar panel factories to magically start springing up all across the US now. And surely the companies will enjoy such a great tax plan, they could hire millions and millions! And pay them lots!

We have enough American made hippy shit. We don’t need more from shithole countries.

....said foxnewsfan. Geeeee, I wonder if you might be a troll account.

It would make sense if the US was levying tariffs against countries or companies engaged in dumping or other practices.

This was a blanket tariff.

Like tesla?

Like tesla?

I would sure hope imposing tariffs wasn't based on the idea that all new US solar companies can enjoy the same success Tesla has. That would be the dumbest shit I've ever heard.

You can pretend this wasn't done to push people towards cheaper, crude alternatives as the price of solar sky-rockets(especially as it's done at the same time those alternatives are deregulated in mass), but most of us with eyes know what we're looking at.

It’d make those goods astronomically expensive. Cheap labor isn’t the sole reason they are beating our asses in those industries.

Being tech savvy is a part of some of those Asian region’s culture and education system. They live it. Tariffs alone will never get us close to that level.

Not only is the workforce there but the entire supply line from resources to factories for all the thousands of components that go into something like a smartphone are efficently located in Asia. The price increase to make it all in the states would have to be massive and big burden to the consumer. The cost of tariffs always get passed on to consumers.

So? its still an imported good.

The thing is that the US producers cant and wont simply meet demand at market prices thus hurting the whole solar industry with a massive supply shock.

Its not like there isnt an alternative to solar energy and cheap subsidized fossil fuels to compete with.

This is fucking over the small business in favor of the corporate overlords, and China will still laugh at America and its measly production, because the Chinese government isnt filled with climate denial yahoos and actually helps with demand.

The Chinese have tried to destroy our steel industry by dumping steel over here at below what the raw materials cost. The Japanese dumped TV sets here in the 80s.

If we concern ourselves with cost alone, then it is a race to the bottom. We can't regress our wages and working conditions to compete with developing nations. So Tariffs make sense.

Pus China is a strategic threat. We can't allow them to squeeze us out of important industries.

You're not going to make an industry that we're not suited to enter spring up overnight by slightly raising the costs of imports. The only thing this will do is raise the cost of solar relative to other forms of energy (to 2016 levels, as the cost has been cratering) and thus cause Americans to pay a little more for energy and pollute a little more.

And the Saudis dumped oil so why no outrage over it?

South Korea is a developing nation now?

Most solar panels arent even manufactured in China.

Tariffs can give a helping hand, till our industry gets geared up.
This is a strategic industry; we can't afford to let China dominate it.

I was critical of the Saudis and their attempts to destroy our shale oil industry

SK was rather protectionist for decades, and they still are more protectionist than us. Just like China and Japan. The US is more open than these countries.

The article in the OP says China is the major source. Below from Vox also says the same thing.

Since most of the solar panels in the US come from Chinathe world’s leader in solar power production — the move is a pointed jab at Beijing.
