So one of my guys has decided to see if maybe Southpaw might be a better fit for him so the purpose of this thread is to keep a log of his progress to share my own experience potentially as a resource or a source of discussion if other coaches want to answer or ask questions or give their own input.

Background: 'M' is a Hobbyist who had has first interclub or 'Smoker' this year, 6'1'' 180lbs pretty athletic but has been pretty much an exclusively lead hand Orthodox fighter, all his work done with the jab and left hook and had a real mental block about throwing his back hand hard due to injury. We had a discussion and agreed that it can't hurt to experiment trying to turn him into a 'Filthy' Southpaw.

Session 1: Complete focus on the basics, had him just stepping in the 4 basic directions after adjusting his stance and Guard to Portside. Some basic punch form drills with a partner focusing on the 1-2 and some very limited padwork. Finished up with an explanation of the basic concepts of Southpaw which direction to move and how the basic 'Open' side guard match up works.
