So is Tom Kazansky going to be SecDef who wants to expand drones and end fighter programs or is he an evil MIC CEO lobbying Congress on the idea of Drones and unmanned aircraft being the future and no need for human pilots anymore...

CGI technology is advanced they can make Kelly look young again. @Cro Cop Is Back

OBLIVION Helmer Joseph Kosinski in Talks to Direct TOP GUN 2

Tom Cruise is getting ready to head back to the Danger Zone — and he’s bringing an old friend along for the ride.

Sources tell Variety that Joseph Kosinski — who directed Cruise in Oblivion — is the front-runner to direct Top Gun 2 for Paramount and Skydance Pictures. While no official offer has been made, several insiders believe one is imminent.

Cruise met with potential helmers prior to and while filming Mission Impossible: 6 in London to ensure the Top Gun sequel was ready to go after production wrapped. Even with Cruise and Kosinski having previously worked together on the 2013 sci-fi action film, sources say it was Kosinski’s vision the sequel’s direction that officially won him the job.

Oblivion was a huge hit for Cruise and Kosinski bringing in $286 million worldwide and only seemed like a matter of time before the two worked again.

Cruise recently confirmed to a British talk show that the sequel was moving forward and would hopefully shoot at the start of next year.

“Its happening,” the 54-year-old actor added. “You’re the first people I’ve told. It’s going to happen.”

The thought of making a follow-up to the 1986 pic that made him a bonafide star has been on Cruise’s agenda for some time. The project has gained momentum in recent years, especially after Jungle Book scribe Justin Marks was tapped to pen latest draft.

This latest project will be set in a world of drone technology and fifth generation fighters and explore the end of an era of dogfighting which made the original film so exhilarating. Other plot details are vague but Val Kilmer has gone on record that he was asked to come back to reprise the role of Iceman opposite Cruise’s Maverick.

Kosinski’s recently wrapped the firefighter action pic Granite Mountain starring Miles Teller and Josh Brolin with Sony releasing this fall.

Hmm, two pieces of Top Gun 2 news in two days. Maybe they're actually getting serious about making this thing.

*Sigh*

Top Gun 2...

The jets are faster...

The women are hotter...

And the men are gayer!!!

I don't really know anything about this potential director. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I never saw Oblivion but I heard it wasn't very good. And had lots of CGI.

Sigh.

Ugh. It's 2017 so they're probably gonna force some gay undertones into it #NotMyTopGun
The 80's got the gay undertones. Now it's basically gay porn where the straight characters are ostracized.

Did you see Tron: Legacy? He directed that as well.

Also, I thought Oblivion was a pretty solid sci-fi film.

I like it. Very cool they're getting Tom & Val in there.

30+ years later from Top Gun, Maverick will be at the VA Hospital suffering from PTSD and coming out of the closet. Charlie will have a lesbo relationship with Goose's widow.

Not one jet plane will be used in the filming.

I suppose we're at the level of CGI technology where we won't be able to tell, unless they start cutting into the laws of physics, or stacking too many jets inside one composition. Although, stacking a ton of jets kind of appeals to me. I hope the lighting doesn't give them away.

Wrong. The only time you really can't tell when CGI is used is when it's used for something minor, usually in the background. But if they make the jets CGI, no matter how good it is, it'll be obvious it's not real and therefore the aerial scenes will lose all their impact.

Seeing how adamant Cruise was about "they have to do it like the first one. It has to be real jets. No CGI" as long as he sticks to that, I'm confident the aerial scenes will look great. Let's just hope it's filmed exactly the same as the first one and the director doesn't suddenly become Michael Bay and start jackhammering the camera around.

Kosinski's style is very, very readable. It's almost non-existent.

I used to think that until recently. I've been surprised to find out a few car chases were entirely rendered in CGI. Like Liam Neeson's HUNT ALL NIGHT and, to a lesser degree, MAN FROM UNCLE:

I've come to figure out that Guy Ritchie's more recent films suffer because they lack his visual stamp, and I think that's due to his increasing reliance on CGI and letting the animators do their thing and he more easily approves their work.

Meh, watching that vid, it looks really good, but you can still tell something's not quite right. So that tips its hand that it's CGI. No matter what, you just can't beat something that's done "in camera."

I really hope like fuck the studios don't push for CGI, and I hope Cruise sticks to his guns about it needing to be all practical. I'm fine with some minor touch ups here and there to make certain aspects of the practical scenes look better (like erasing out obvious imperfections or touching up background shots, such as if they need to erase a mountain or add a hill in the distance) but to do an all-CGI jet, missile shot, or explosion would be a huge disservice to the film. So hopefully they don't get too crazy with the story and require a mid air collision or something where it has to be CGI, because that will throw everything off. Just keep it all practical and write the story in a way that doesn't necessitate any major CGI set pieces.

I've already come to terms with the fact that there's no possible way this film will live up to the original. I just hope it's not an offensive slap in the face like Jack Reacher 2 or Mission Impossible 2. I hope I can watch it and at least say "Wow. That was pretty good." Hopefully Bruckheimer and Cruise together bring us a sequel that fans can be proud of. Something that can live in the shadow of the original and not stain its legacy in any way.
