I used to be a big fan of interim titles as they keep divisions moving when the champ is out, and can force champions to fight a certain guy to unify the titles.

However, the UFC have basically made interims meaningless by not forcing unifications. Bisping fought GSP instead of being forced to wait for Whittaker, and then Tony Ferguson wasn't promoted to full champion when Conor was stripped (Kabob gets the title for beating Al??? Lol). And of course now the UFC are considering stripping Colby after just a month, because he won't fight short notice in September.

It's no wonder Ortega turned down the interim title fight against Stephens. I still agree with Ortega not being paid, but interims are basically worthless now.

The UFC are going to have to start being more aggressive in stripping 'undisputed' champions that can't fight regularly.

Stripping Colby if he isn't willing to fight the champion is totally the right thing to do.

The interim belt is basically there to say this guy is the champion til the actual champion is back.

The actual champion is ready. The interim champion isn't. It's a meaningless title now.

Interim belts have always been and will always be a glorified no.1 contender placeholder with championship pay attached.

Colby cowardly won a decision via stalling against the cage and using shitty unified rules to score points so he doesnt deserve any gold.

That is total bullshit. The UFC are demanding Colby fight on the September card which is way too short notice. Hes not refusing to fight the champion. He just had a tough 5 round fight a month ago, and wants another 2-3 months before he fights again.

This is completely reasonable. Tyron could have fought RDA in May and refused, so now he had to wait for Colby.

Yeah, the interim belts were always gimmicky, but they used to be legit in that they led to immediate unification bouts. These days, everyone knows that "interim belt" basically translates to "fuck, we need a title on the line to try to sell this card".

So the champ is the one who should sit back and wait then?

It hasn't even been a year since Woodley last defended his title, Colby vs RDA for the interim title was ridiculous to begin with.

Pretty much though I do feel their "weight" has lessened as of late. So much carries that "iffy" feeling.

He outstruck Dos Nachos while walking him down and sticking his tongue out, he outclassed Dos Nachos. He took risks he didn't even need to take with some of his striking, he had already 100% won, but yet Colby still had some fun brawling.. that is not a man that was struggling in that fight.

People have to stop taking the interim title seriously. It is a marketing ploy and it is obviously working because people are treating it like it is equal to the real title. It is a temporary title and nothing more.

Tony got hurt then Holloway got pulled. So yeah ... fat Raging Al.

Interim titles are just another way to say #1 contender while allowing for the possibility of the champ being laid off for a very long time.

Curious if interim champs get points though.

He won 3 of 5 rounds via pressing against the cage, scoring meaningless takedowns with 0 damage on the ground, 0 submission attempts, etc. UFC rules praise shitty wrestling above all. Good for him doing the most with his limited fighting skills.

He outstruck Dos Nachos, check the stats. He beat him in the striking and wrestling department. Dos Nachos looked like a lost puppy compared to his performance vs Lawler, so it shows how good Colby atleast is at the bare minimum.

Too short a notice..? He took no damage in his last fight far less damage than the Maia fight, he's medically cleared to fight, he's more real fight time tuned than Tyron by his fighting consistency if anything he's at the advantage. Colby hasn't built company clout points to get a you can sit & wait ticket.

Besides wasn't he always crowing he was breaking Tyron in practice, let me see if he can break him in a 4Real fight.

Even Chael's fake UFC belts were worth more than this shit.

I know you are a troll, so its ok. But have in mind that RDA had more total strikes in that fight. Colby had the more strikes in 3 rounds but less overall.

Yes but at an INTERIM champion, he doesn't have the bargaining power. The interim belt is irrelevant if the champion is active.

He is a glorified number 1 contender.

If the number 1 contender isn't ready, then it goes to the next person.
