The Great Smartphone & Tablet Thread, v5: Death to the Headphone Jack

I have the iPhone 7 plus, I can call, text and watch porn on it without any issues so I recommend it

These look pretty sweet tbh. 2004's making a comeback in 2017.

I've seen pics taken by huawei p10 taken by an ex-officemate and they were awesome.
What's the cost on one of those? I'm looking to upgrade from my Cherry Mobile p700 model and need a cheap, reliable smartphone of average quality.

Tough luck. Huawei P10s are around 32-34k php(converted from ringgit). Get a xiaomi if you want a reliable but cheap phone. Im actually using a meizu and these things are solid.

I have a oneplus 3 which I really like but I heard the oneplus 5 is coming out soon so maybe check that one out.

I am about to get a new phone too.. probably switching from iPhone to android.

Samsung seems pretty unreliable lately - I am thinking the new LG G6 is probably at the top of my list, but we'll see.

Holy crap. Text messaging with that thing would be a nightmare for me.

Post sent from a Samsung S8+.
All the girls back in the days could text on those things faster than I type on a keyboard and all while under the desk. They don't even need to look at it. You can tell the girls are texting each other under the desk.

Galaxy S8+ is the best right now. The Note 8 would beat it and it's coming out end of the year. I plan to get the Note 8 next year if nobody's face exploded.

I'm sick of having a big phone. Anyone have a recommendation for a compact phone?

The only two I know of are Sony Xperia X Compact, and iPhone SE.

Both seem like great devices. But I think the SE may be out of the running though because of the super high cost for 128gb and no expandable storage. I can't believe there isn't more competition in this segment.

So just today I checked out the rumored specs on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 because the first concept designs for the phone just dropped 9 hours ago on Phone Arena:

Concept Design (not official; actual phone may end up looking much different)

That isn't official yet, but holy f**kballs! A 6.4" screen?!! Here I thought 6.2" was ballsy. I guess they're just throwing out the notion that these are 1-handed phones, anymore. If you have large hands, like me, then a well-designed 5.5" phone isn't difficult to operate that way, especially if you customize your UI correctly. 5.7" pushes it.

hmm ill probably move to this

Best Phones Under 5"
  • (4.0") iPhone SE
  • (4.6") Sony Xperia Z5 Compact
  • (4.6") Sony Xperia X Compact
  • (4.7") Samsung Galaxy A3 2017
  • (4.7") iPhone 7
Also, the Sony Xperia X Compact may be a year younger, but the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact actually is the more powerful phone with a flagship class chipset. While the X has 1GB more RAM it uses what is basically a mid-level Snapdragon chipset. The major player you're missing is the Samsung Galaxy A3:

Going back 5-6 generations this has been the identifier with Qualcomm chipsets:
  • Snapdragon 8xx --> flagship class
  • Snapdragon 6xx --> midlevel
  • Snapdragon 4xx --> mainstream
  • Snapdragon 2xx --> budget/economy
You can compare their respective scores in benchmarks. Phone arena aggregates many.

Oh yeah, Microsoft also unveiled the new Surface Pro, which is the 5th in the series, and the first refresh to the line since late 2015, and there are basically no significant changes whatsoever to the line. The dimensions are nearly identical. It lacks a USB-C port, strangely, and while the Pen is supposedly improved, it no longer comes with the tablet, and must be purchased separately like the specialized "Surface Cover" keyboard. It adds ~10% processing power while taking the battery life from 9 hours to 13.5 hours, so that is an awesome improvement, and the most desired. Sometimes subtle fixes are the best.

Otherwise, the only real major change is that there is now a Cellular-capable offering if you want internet on the go.

One of these is the Surface 4, and one is the Surface 5:

Phone arena is a great site, thanks

Sadly, the Galaxy a3 is not on the same level as the other 2 phones.

Even with a mid-range SOC, the x compact still has much higher benchmarks than my 2.5 year old flagship phone

Interestingly the x compact is secretly a water proof phone too, even though it's not claimed as such.

I'm starting to feel this way as well. I think down the line I will get the smaller end iPhone.

@Forum Sentinal Bunz, how do you like your goggle pixie?
