    JUST DO IT ALREADY!!!

the one thing i can get behind! that would put us way ahead of everyone else and finally get the ball rolling on lunar colonizes and future space tech!

I'm pretty sure the Outer Space Treaty is gonna make mining the moon a particularly difficult endeavor. Going to it and exploring is one thing, setting up shop and mining it out is another thing entirely.

Would it even be profitable? Sounds incredibly difficult.

Yeah, but good luck enforcing mining rights. You can own the platform, but not the celestial body itself, nor parts of it. Mining resources could be construed as an attempt to claim the moon by a particularly salty signatory (say...russia). Beyond that, conducting operations in space is basically an invitation for accusations of weaponizing space to defeat MAD, because the first country to actually get a viable weapon up there is going to call the shots with regards to space.

Like I said, exploring is one thing, mining is an entirely different beast. Either it'll be an ISS type collaborative effort, or it just won't happen. No way in hell one country gets the go ahead to take point on this from everyone else.

The answer is currently no. With the tech we have, it's more costly to go to and return from the Moon than any payload we could bring back.

Start mining the moon, it loses mass, its orbit gets fucked... all kinds of natural disasters on Earth. Why can't we just mine the sun?

You could only mine it at night otherwise it's too hot.

It just seems like we're decades or even centuries off from doing that. To get the drilling and extracting equipment there, the personnel, living accommodations, and the energy to ship the material drilled out from it and back to Earth just seems daunting.

And all that for what, "water, methane and hydrogen"? I don't think there's a shortage of that here.

A Dyson Sphere is one of the coolest space hypotheticals I've heard of

Basically it's a giant ring, series of rings, or even an entire shell that goes around a star and captures most or all of its energy.

.....lmao so does this mean since we're mining on earth should we be flying into wild space? This is not how shit works you understand that right?

I'm pretty sure that's against space law. Speaking of which, we should be wondering why we don't see aliens everywhere or even anywhere. That's huge. If they're out there, you can deduce via game theory one of them would have made contact so what gives.

lunar or astroid or both? Your half wrong.....

we have the tech and we have a way to get the stuff back, however we the lack funding the program.

Asteroid mining ...look up the ARM project. The best way we could fund lunar base which would you be against us having base on the moon? We could expand on it and use it to launch future mission to mars.

Water, Helium 3(which is incredibly rare) and REM.

As for asteroid mining? Same thing but we'd mine asteroids for water and REM
