In the time of money fights and fake beefs and looking tough with lame ass tattoos, it feels like gone are the fighters like Sakuraba, BJ penn and Wanderlei who didn't give a fuck who they were fighting. BJ Penn was fighting Machida at heavyweight, Sakuraba was fighting Igor, Wanderlei was fighting Hunt, et...

Now, fighters are calling out fights that they can win, and ducking fighters that they are going to have a difficult time with, and talking shit to fighters who they are never going to fight. I am not really the fan of reminiscising of the old times in an unfairly positive light, but it's sad how the mma landscape has changed.

I understand your overall point and I wholeheartedly agree, TS (even though I'm far from a fan of BJ Penn and evern farther a fan of Wanderlei, lol).

That said, I think it is only fair that we mention present fighters who do seem to have that mentality. Max Holloway seems to be one of those. Frankie Edgar too—even though he's been around for a while, well, he's still in a #1 contender spot. Maybe Brian Ortega too; he didn't have to take the Edgar fight, and he did.

I think Stipe Miocic is one of these guys too.

Thats natural when fighters make more money and you arent allowed to use peds to recover faster. If wanderlei was paid 5 million a fight in pride,he wouldnt be fighting 6 times a year. No comission stops guys from fighting the same night in japan, and mma fighters just didnt make the same money they do now.
    Hungrier fighters gonna do more.

Honestly, even though Sakuraba's run was very inspiring, it was also incredibly sad to see him lose to much heavier opponents and he'd have been better off if he had stayed in his proper weight class. He received some serious abuse that could have been avoided. I think it's good that fighters take care of their health more.

Fighters like GSP showed people to be smarter and by playing safe ... MORE fans overall will respect you unfortunately.

Now guys like Conor took it to another level and nearly everyone wants to be GSP or Conor.

It's a sad time when most fights take place over social media and "fans" actually give them credit for it as if it means something. Who fucking cares that Cody was insulted by TJ on twatter or DC got the best of Jones on instagram. When the mma world gets it's news from TMZ, we done fixed something that wasn't broke.
Oh, TS, Wanderlei has a shitty tramp stamp on teh back of his head. Just saying.

Y'know your basement? Well right underneath that.
I dunno, as much as i'm impressed by guys like Sakuraba and Penn (Saku's my favourite fighter) - I think its kind of nice that fighters aren't put into the position where they have to fight much bigger men to make money

In a world where sports evolve and athletes become somehow even more elite, the UFC and Bellator have decided that the easiest way to make money is by feeding loud fighters easy fights, giving title shots to people who haven't earned them, and basically fed the legitimacy of the sport to the "JUST BLEED" fan. So in a world where the best receiver in football transcends those who came before him, where Lebron James and Steph Curry are changing how basketball has to be played, MMA has in fact devolved.
What (arguably, of course) started as the fights designed to figure out the best style quickly evolved in to fights to determine who was the most complete fighter, and then just as MMA became mainstream it devolved into a battle of who could be the most gaudy shithead with the minimum amount of proving ground. The UFC, and Bellator as well, have turned MMA into a race to the bottom.
It is pretty remarkable considering Pride was crooked as the day is long and still the UFC is setting the bar for seediness.
