The Basement Tapes 2015

Good to see another strongman here. I'll be following!

I can't quite call myself a strongman yet, my first competition is coming up, jumping straight into the open division just hoping not to zero anything.

What weight class do you compete at?

What weight class do you compete at?

Currently I'm competing in the 181s, novice division(NAS rules allows for three attempts at novice). I did my first strongman comp last year, Miami's Baddest Man, which was hosted by my coach and the first NAS sanctioned here.

That looks like a great place to train, I primarily train in my basement, which isn't ideal but it works for me.

The Battle Axe is a helluva gym and I'm honored to be a part of it.

It doesn't matter where you train or how limited your access to implements are. Thinking outside the box is key.

Push Press

45x12,12
135x2
155x2
175x2
195x2
215x2,2,2,2
Added belt
215x7 +1 rep pr

I was hoping for 8 or more reps but I hit my jaw on the third rep and chipped a tooth which kind of took my head out of it.

Ring pull-ups

BWx10,10,10

BTN Press

65x10
85x10,10,10

Band hammer curls

Orange x 15,15,15

2/9/17

Made up for the lackluster push presses yesterday with a great circus dumbbell pr today.

Circus Dumbbell

60x2 each arm
80x2 each
100x2 each
120x2 each
130x2 each
140x3 right arm

140x2 left arm

Both top sets are PRs, the 3 reps with the right arm felt great, my technique still needs some work on the left side, the bell is ending up too far from my body.

Nice volume, and congrats on the PRs! I've cracked my chin multiple times and chipped a tooth one of them, it's just a matter of when not if either barbell OHP.

Thanks @SmallvilleCK

Just a light lower body day, continuing my slow progress on DOH axle lifts, I hate my small hands.

155x2
165x2
175x1
185x1
190x1 +5lb PR

DOH axle deadlifts

195x2
205x1
220x1 +5lb PR
185x5,5,5

Barbell complex - 5 RDLs, 1 hang clean, 3 paused front squats

135x1
155x1
175x1
185x1
205x1
225x1

Walking lunges

45x5 each x 3 sets

2/13/17

Incline Press - Paused close grip

135x6
155x6
175x6
185x6
195x6
205x6
215x5+fail

Got a little over zealous on these, I didn't want to fail, but I'm pretty sure this is a 5rm.

Pendley Row - strict

135x6
185x6
215x6,6,6

Z-press

115x5
135x5
145x5 +10lb 5rm
155x5 +20lb 5rm

Really happy with these, although they felt a lot tougher than they looked.

Band Curls

Orange x 15
Tan x 12,12,12
Some static holds and negatives with blue band

2/16/17

Been working a lot and taking care of a sick toddler, haven't had the time to do the weighted carry work I've wanted to do, but I managed to do a little with my sandbag today.

Sandbag picks and carries (the sandbag was 225lb, but it has been sitting out in the rain and it felt significantly heavier today)

40ft with one turn
40ft with one turn
80ft with one turn (had to relap it after 60ft)

The picks were slow and shitty, I could barely hold onto the damn thing, it's really wide and dense on one side and loose on the other. I was happy with how I was moving once I was able to get it into position.

The event in my upcoming meet is 200lb keg, 50ft down, 50ft back and then load it over a bar. I'm thinking my best bet may be to lap it and get it high on my chest before the run instead of carrying it lower and then lapping it to load it.

2/17/17

Deadlifts

135x3 paused 3" deficit
225x3 paused 3" deficit
315x3 paused 3" deficit
385x1 paused 3" deficit
405x1 paused 3" deficit
425x1 paused 3" deficit
445x2 paused 3" deficit
445x4 3" deficit
445x5 +15lb 5RM

I left a rep or two in the tank on each set I didn't want to push it too hard only 8 days out from competition. My form felt a little off on the last set, but I have pulled from the floor in almost 8 weeks so I am happy to get a pr.

Paused Front Squats

115x3
165x3
215x3
225x3
235x3
245x3
255x3

Easy, fast, although tired from deadlifts.

Well I just thoroughly fucked myself up, I think I fully tore my partially torn ACL and probably other ligaments as well.

Push Press

45x10,10
85x5
135x2
155x2
175x2
195x2
215x2
225x2,2
Added belt
225x7+fail multiple pops in my right knee

Part of me hates that I pushed the set too far, while another part of me knows that that knee was never going to be right until surgery and this will force my hand to finally get it repaired. It was bound to go sooner or later if I kept on pushing myself which I plan on doing.

I'll post the video as soon as I get up the guts to watch it, I think there was an audible snap, plus my girlish "just fucked my body yell".

Dammit, man that SUCKS. I'm sorry to hear it. How's it feeling today? Swelling, discoloration?

I have about 15 degrees of pain free range of motion, it's not black and blue, but swollen and very warm, and I can barely walk. I'll be happy if it's only one ligament torn. I've been working with a partially torn ACL for the past 2.5 years and I knew this was a risk. Rehabbing the ACL was what got me back into lifting after 3 years off.

Here's the video, warning: don't watch if you don't want to hear things break, see a knee buckle, and hear a cry of anguish.

I did some grip work today, 30 pull-ups, some curls and some seated db presses.

That was heartbreaking BT, I'm rooting for only one ligament and a speedy surgical and rehab process. Nice job getting in some work today regardless, that's championship spirit right there.

Thanks for the support, I figure I might as well build my upper back strength, grip, bench press and strict press while my knee is out of service. The sad/funny thing about that set was I already had a 2 rep pr for that weight at #7, but I just had 8 ingrained in my mind.

Oh, man, that's terrible. I heard the same sound when my LCL snapped in BJJ, feels bad. I hope you recover well and get everything fixed.

Damn ... really bad luck mate. Awful timing. Upper body beast mode engaged.
