The All-Purpose Motorsports Thread

so you're saying returning to fueling during the race wouldn't add a bit of strategy to a boring series?
adding any type of variable might alter the outcome and make it less tedious.
I know, how about have two drivers per car and they have to switch at some point like they do in endurance
racing? Or how about have a 70 lap race go 35 laps and the remaining 35 with a flipped grid like they
do in BTTC.
They need to do something because it's borderline watchable at this point, and I've been watching it for
40 years. It's gotten progressively worse from a spectator's viewpoint.

Whatever a racing body tries to do, teams find ways to work with it. The choice of tires were suppose to do what running with a light fuel load did previously. It was thought that teams would have to pit twice in a race for tires but they have been able to make it on two sets for the most part.

Pit speed limits make it take too long to be able to use the speed gained by softer tires or low fuel loads. When a car loses 21 seconds or more by stopping, teams can't afford to make one more stop than their competitors unless it's under the perfect safety car circumstances like in Australia this year. Even if they could be a half of a second a lap faster, in a 50 lap race, that time can't be made up.

The wider tires allow faster cornering but also make the cars wider faster and more difficult to pass.

The Drag Reduction System was supposed to aid in passing but it hasn't provided the big benefits they anticipated. The aerodynamics mean the car behind is running in dirty air so the DRS doesn't provide enough advantage.

Indycar went to everyone using the same chassis with two different engine suppliers so everyone had the same aerodynamics. They have a limited amount of fuel both on board, as well as for the race. They work fuel strategy but if cautions come, it can ruin their race.

NASCAR closes the pits until all the cars catch up with the pace car so cars can't pit from the rear and gain an advantage on the leaders.

I've seen people spend thousands of dollars on cars and motors to win in a street stock class on a dirt track where the winner got $100.

People always want to go back to the days when racing seemed simpler, but even then, money made the difference. People did come up with things they could do better, but those things soon spread to other cars. You can't put the genie back in the bottle.

Interested to see how that turns out.

Charlotte roval was awesome by the way. Great move by Nascar.

It looked like a demolition derby. All Jimmy Johnson had to do was follow Truex and he would have still been in the Chase.

I thought there were going to be even more wrecks than there were. The cars looked like the cars from Days of Thunder after the race. Larson bouncing off the wall in the last turn to get by Earnhardt to get that extra point to keep him in the chase. Pretty cool finish all in all. Much better than what would have transpired if they had just ran the oval.

Hamilton fastest in first practice at Suzuka, .446 fster than Bottas, .682 seconds faster than Ricciardo and almost a full second faster than the Ferraris.

The Mercedes continued to be the fastest in the second practice.
Hamilton, Bottas, Vettel, Verstappen, Raikonnen and Ricciardo were the fast 6.

There is speculation that Ferrari are holding back on engine power but Vettel was going off track fairly often.

Practice 3 was interrupted by light rain. Not enough to use intermediate tires but too much to run very fast times. Vettel was the only one to get a lap in before it got wet. It dried off enough at the end of the session for Hamilton to set the fastest lap before Hulkenberg's crash ended the session early. Should be interesting in qualifying if the light mist persists.

Hamilton takes the pole followed by Bottas, Verstappen and Raikkonen as rain started just as Q3 started. Both Ferrari and Mercedes were ready to start Q3 on intermediate tires but Mercedes switched to slicks at the last second and were able to get a lap in before there was much rain. Vettel could only manage 9th.

After qualifying they were asking Verstappen whether he would get in the way of the championship race. He asked if there was still a championship race.

Ferrari messed up their tire strategy, Hamilton got pole, Ricciardos car died. Only story here is that Ricciardo actually got visibly mad this time.

Ferrari messed up, but both drivers went too far onto the kerbs when the track was still dry and screwed up their laps. The track was probably best when they were out there on slicks. But sebknew he had to put in a great lap and choked as he does. I assume if the course is dry tomorrow, they still use what they qualied on in q2. Dont know why they wouldnt, but just asking. Haha. Mercs atart on softs and everyone else on supers i believe.

awful pit strategy by Ferrari.
Maurizio might be gone next year if this continues.

Yes, Both Mercedes and Grosjean will be on the softs and maybe all of the cars in the field that didn't make it through Q2. The Mercedes were faster in Q2 on the soft tires than the Ferraris on the supersoft tires. Ferrari will be hoping for an early safety car in the race to try and lure Mercedes into a two stop strategy. It will be interesting if that happens. If it doesn't happen, the Mercedes will likely run away with it.

Verstappen is the wild card on the start.

Yes. I am a lewis fan, but hoping its not straight forward. I think he is cementing his legacy as the greatest driver ever this season. Dude is so flawless under pressure.

Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene is concerned that technical information is being leaked from the squad, having been forced to confirm reports that the FIA have fixed another sensor to the Scuderia's cars to monitor electrical output at the Japanese Grand Prix.

https://www.gpfans.com/en/articles/2877/ferrari-worried-by-information-leak-in-suzuka/

There is speculation the Ferrari might have been bending the rules on battery output by splitting the location so all of the output wouldn't show up on the FIAs monitoring. That could account for the sudden surge in performance.

Vettel is an idiot! He manages to get to fourth behind Verstappen who has a 5 second penalty coming. Vettel tries to pass Verstappen, they collide, Vettel spins, drops to 19th and has to pass all of those cars again with damage to the side of his car.

Agreed. That just shows his poor judgement and poise under pressure. Bide your time and make a proper takeover but dont force the issue. Max was wrong for kimi collision, but not that imo.

And how perfect was that timing with the end if the ufc and this race start!
