Tennis star stunned and annoyed by Bizarre Colin Kaepernick question at presser

I miss the days when a Ryan Leaf or Tim Couch sucked, and then they were ghosts.

Well I can't even hate on Kaep honestly, his football career was floundering so he was intelligent to move onto something that keeps him socially relevant.

"Journalist" just trying to bait him into a sound bite. Nice shut down by Kyrgios. Godawful question.

That dickwad would not have asked that question to a white tennis player.

Its a dumb question to one of the dumbest athletes. if you are not aware of Kyrgios, he is one of the biggest douches in all of sports. he has a ton of talent but on more than one occasion has put little to no effort into certain matches, clearly throwing it, which leads to match fixing accusations. just a total dick if you ever spend any time listening to him

I think in the past he has been psychologically immature and just melted in the heat of battle. He needs to stop being such a douche though because he is a pretty good player. The journo was probably just trying to stir him up, much like everyone used to do to McEnroe.

American's trying to race bait.

Well I for one am extremely shocked........

That was Gilbert Menendez

Thank you so much, I never saw that before.

I fondly remembrer the day I announced at an editorial meeting that Wand was doing a seminar in our town. It was a few years ago in France, so nobody had any clue who he was or what he was doing. My guess is that the guy was a local amateur correspondent who was sent because none of the actual journalists were available or cared. Some of those guys are truly as awful as that.

ehh St.Nick loves attention and as tweeted about the football player but I agree he was hunting for a non-tennis story.

the reporter was American judging by his accent one of the websites or newspapers who still wants to write about Colin KAepernick and push that narrative probably asked him to ask the tennis player about CK

in their defense, does anyone read articles about tennis?<Y2JSmirk>

There’s no better place on Earth to talk about NFL players protesting during the national anthem than the Australian Open, apparently.

Nick Kyrgios was holding what, by all accounts, was a pretty relaxed news conference following his straight-sets defeat of Rogerio Dutra Silva in the first round of the Australian Open. Then, a journalist ventured a peculiar question about former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who began kneeling during the national anthem in 2016 to protest systemic racial inequality, among other causes. The question to Kyrgios ran as follows:

“You’re friends with the American football player Colin Kaepernick and supportive of him in the past,” the reporter asked. “What are your thoughts on his not being signed by an American football team this season?

“I don’t think I’ve ever spoken to him in my life,” Kyrgios replied.

“But what are your thoughts about that?” the reporter persisted.

“I mean, I don’t even … Where does that question even come from?” Kyrgios shot back. “We’re at the Australian Open, man.” Immediately afterward, Kyrgios ended the news conference.

Here’s the full awkward exchange:

The question was strange on a number of levels. First off, Kyrgios is Australian. Second, the Australian Open is, as you might have gathered from the name, played in Australia. Third, the Kaepernick saga is, for all intents, over and done with, as it’s highly unlikely one of the four remaining NFL playoff teams will pick him up at quarterback now. Fourth, this is, you know, tennis and not the NFL.

Kaepernick hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2016 season, and protests exploded across the NFL in the wake of President Donald Trump’s criticism of the league in general and Kaepernick in particular. Kyrgios knelt prior to a Laver Cup match in September, the same weekend NFL players began a concerted protest against Trump’s words, but Kyrgios said at the time it was a “personal tribute.” (Kyrgios has made his feelings about Trump known; he did an interview about a year ago with a T-shirt bearing the image of Trump with devil horns.)

For the record, Kyrgios and Kaepernick do share an agent, but beyond that appear to have no public connection. Clearly, the reporter was looking for some kind of statement, but got nothing beyond an awkward little story.

Kyrgios is a douchey toddler and honestly I'm just glad someone annoyed him. They can all shut the fuck up about Kap already but I can't get mad at this when the result is an asshole being bothered.

He has the same irritability as John McEnroe when it comes to the media, but he lacks the desire to win that John had.

yea he is a total headcase. but where as McEnroe let his anger increase his will to win, Nick often just quits. And like I said, in a sport where you can bet, that is not a good look since many will speculate you are throwing the match, especially when tennis has had its share of that over the past couple years.

and the fact that he doesnt give a shit about his attitude or the people watching him makes it impossible to root for him. i seriously dont understand how he could have one single fan outside of his immediate family. And even they have to be terribly embarrassed to admit it
