A Southern California teacher who was recorded bashing the U.S. military in a profane classroom rant was fired Tuesday evening.
Board of Education President Aurora Villon said the El Rancho Unified School District reached a unanimous decision to fire Gregory Salcido, a history teacher at El Rancho High School and elected Pico Rivera city councilman, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“His comments do not reflect what we stand for, who we are,” Villon said, adding that “the classroom should never be a place where students feel that they are picked at, bullied, intimidated."

good. ignorant and public comments should have consequences.. losing your job is definitely one of them...

Say it "Off the clock", no problem. His opinion and his right to voice it.

Say it "On the Clock", problem. His classroom isn't the place for his personal opinion unless specifically asked in the context of a discussion relative to the question he is being asked and his answer is specific to the question rather than ideological or political ranting. Even then, one can answer in a negative fashion without the histrionics by merely stating one disagrees with a policy, person or group. Passion is valuable but professionalism is more so.

I'm surprised it took this long. I guess they must have given his career up until this point serious consideration. Having thought about it a bit since this story first broke, I think my biggest problem with his comments are that he was just plain nasty about it (regardless of how he intended those comments to be received). If he wanted to take a moment to broaden that kid's perspective on the military or suggest some reading, that would be one thing. His rant was about as far from educational as you can get, though. He deserves this.

What an elitist, judgemental prick. Have fun with that job hunt while your comments haunt you for ever.

I do have to say.. the US is moving in the direction on North Korea.

It is the job of a teacher to present information, not opinion.

It is their job to illuminate the world so that the classroom can draw their own conclusions.

A proper teacher should be able to guide a student down a path they do not personally agree with, if that student is interpreting facts through their own lens.

That process, the development of being able to explain your belief, is the root of the liberal arts, history and english specifically.

It does not sound like that is what this teacher was doing.

Good, keep that shit out of the classroom and job.

He has a right to be a shit head and teach as long as he does nothing illegal or again his contract
and keeps it out of the classroom.

Well, he should be fired for how he chooses to present his argument and for being political like that.
But the core of his argument is correct. The US and a large part of the West rely on the lower US classes for their security and military manpower.
If all of a sudden the US would have European or Japanese social systems where would you get the bodies from?
You would have to have mandatory military service.
Certainly, something you can see critical.

Update - The fired teacher has been hired by Berkely to be their new Professor of Military History.

The teacher claims to be an intellectual yet he does not sound like one.

I agree.. But disparaging the military so terribly, even off hours, is never a good idea for somebody with a government job like teaching. Ever.
