I didn't even know stray dogs were an actual thing until I visited a friend at his halfway house in North Miami. Most of North Miami, and this part in particular, is ghetto af so I wasn't surprised that literally every person I encountered shamelessly asked me for change and/or cigarettes, but the amount of stray dogs running around everywhere really was a bit of a culture shock lol

I knew of a guy that if he saw a stray and it didn't have a collar or tag on, he'd pull out his rifle, shoot it, then toss the carcass in the back of his truck and take it to the dump.

My High School had 3 Bernese Mountain Dogs in the guidance wing. They calmed kids down. They loved attention and being pet, and did wonders for all sorts of things...kids with ocd and anxiety would take tests in that wing. The school psych was there as well and the dogs would sit in sessions. They let the dogs roam the school during SATS. Meanwhile pit bulls attract the worst kind of owners and they are doomed because of it. And unlike companies like Tommy Hilfiger, Cristal, and Bentley, they can’t say stop buying us ghetto fucks.

These two articles state that Pit Bulls have been banned in parts of Colorado for decades.

The population of Pits compared to Labs is very low because of the ban. And yet they still manage to place second on that list.

I guess tho if I lived in that area I might feel differently. Seriously it was weird af, stray dogs would constantly run up on you (like the actual stray humans begging for cash/cigs, ironically enough) and you weren't sure if the dog was gonna be aggressive or just check you out and move on to the next person. And I'm not sure how I didn't see dog carcasses throughout the streets because they literally roam the neighborhood streets in the middle of traffic

That's the thing right there. We don't know. When I'm walking my German Shepherd, people will ask "Can I pet her?" I let them because I'm her master and I introduced her to a lot of different people since she was a puppy.

With strays, it's a crapshoot.

I'll never forget this one neighborhood I had to walk through to get to my cousins house who I hung out with pretty much daily. Fucking dogs were aways loose and big ones. I would always walk down this street that was on the outer edge of the neighborhood and I could jump a fence and cut through a park to my cousins. Like 3 or 4 times I would see dogs on a street that ran parallel to mine and they would start hauling ass towards me. I'd walk faster to get out of their line of sight and then full on sprint to the park.

When me and my mom were walking through it one day this guys pitbulls got out of his house as he was talking to someone outside. Ran through his front yard gate that was wide open and came charging at me and my mom. My mom put me behind her and started cussing the dogs and the owner out. He was apologizing like crazy but my mom gave 0 fucks.

The tribe that was in the news for the DAPL pipeline put down over 100 stray dogs 2-3 years ago.

In some parts adopting a rezzie stray is a status symbol. They tend to be very smart and loyal (but practically untrainable).

A poodle and a retriever severely mauled two kids in my neighborhood. Neither dog had any history of dog or human aggression.
