Spiked Magazine's Unsafe Space Tour Debate Panel: "Identity Politics: The New Racialism on Campus?"

This attitude is part of the reason trump won too

Ahh, yes, we should handle idiots with kid gloves and coddle them while they make uninformed decisions that screw us all, on the basis that, if we try to reason with them or aptly characterize them as irrational, they will then turn around and blame our condescension for them making the uninformed decision we sought to prevent.

There are plenty of unintelligent people who had the personal virtue and sensibility not to vote for this idiot out of some misplaced sense anti-intellectual spite. The idea that morons can blame sensible people calling them morons (in an apt characterization of them voting for morons) for the decision that those morons made when they voted in morons is in itself moronic.

That's a lot of words to effectively repeat "we smart they dumb"

The point is if you generalise entire groups of society as racist moron don't be surprised when they don't vote for who you want. Hilary calls a bunch of people deplorables and then people wonder why they don't vote for her?

This again is false justification nonsense. It provides supporters of any irrational, nonsensical, or downright suicidal policy or figure a guaranteed justification: either they weren't sufficiently forewarned, or their hands were forced by people shaming them for their initial impulse to support.

Also, I don't think, nor did I say, that all Trump supporters are "racist morons." Trump is a racist moron. His supporters are a collection of racists and morons, and I would assume that the majority only occupy one group.

Doesn't change the fact that beittiling a large chunk of the voting population isn't a great way to win an election. Which is my point. Maybe try offering them some reason to vote for you rather than taking shit. I'm not even American and even I can see that is what happened.

Oh and Im sorry "we smart they dumb or racist"

Oh, trust me, we tried. For the better part of two years we tried.

Oh and Im sorry "we smart they dumb or racist"

No hard feelings

It was an interesting discussion but worth noting that all of these people (maybe not the woman?) seemed to be coming at the issue from the left and thinking about it in terms of how the left can avoid getting stung by the problem of political correctness. I felt it lacked the perspective of people who recognize PC as a problem in and of itself.

The entire panel is from the Left, but clearly of the rational and sane variety and not the Berkeley/Evergreen type.

Yep and at least the bearded Englishman called PC a form bigotry which it is, intolerance toward those who hold different opinions from oneself.

I consider PC a factor but not one of the keys to Trump winning and I don't think the left will figure out the real reasons for the loss for many decades.

The British guy with the beard actually described most political debates in the WR to a tee.

Actually, it's kinda amusing watching them describe how Hillary voters generalize all Trump voters, then see the response from @Trotsky, LOL.

The thing that sticks in my craw is how often people stare at me shocked when I say I don't vote blue... it's like they see I'm semi brown and assume I vote for shills like Killary.

THAT shit pisses me off to no end.

Watching. Will comment after.

EDIT:

It's a good watch. Most of what they stated is valid. I have no personal issue with PC speech in the public square so long as it doesn't bleed into government action. I think that's part and parcel of how society sets its mores.

That said, and I said it during the election, there is a segment of our population that feels largely disregarded by the modern social movements or, more pointedly, they feel targeted by those movements. They and Trump are as PC in their views as their opposition (as noted in the video) but they are also severely ostracized as a result of not matching the views of the literati. They feel like outsiders and are treated like outsiders even though they represent a large swathe of the population.

I think one speaker stated the most insightful comment on the issue - they have been pathologized by their opposition and, naturally, responded to that in a way that best indicates that they are not an abnormal section of the public.

As it turns out, the organizers of this excellent debate panel are actually on a tour to multiple U.S campuses to discuss various "unsafe" topics, with special guests at each stop.

This is how people should engage in their dialogues, rather than shouting down everyone and think they are better than everyone.

PS: You can go ahead and delete all the off-topic shit from people who clearly didn't even open the vid nor have any intention on discussing any of the points brought up by the panel, before they can derail this thread.

Correct.

I think there were so many elements to Trump's victory, it's hard to say what truly won him the election. Whether it be PC culture, his stance of immigration, Hillary's corruption, or people growing tired of smug liberals, it's honestly hard to say.

Pretty damn good discussion/video. Breath of fresh air

That's pretty much what I got from it.

He can dress it up all he likes, but ultimately it's just more partisan shit flinging, that is a bit overdone at this point.

build the wall and ban muslims

when he said those two things, i feel a big percentage of his supporters just rallied behind that

This is exactly right, People can give their intellectual arguments for why he won.But 30-35 percent of the voters rallied behind him after those statements, it is all about fear and xenophobia and it Always was.

How is political correctness a problem in and of itself?

It's not, though. Empty, identity-obsessed voters like you are jokes to persons with adult minds: dangerous, democratically cancerous jokes, but jokes nonetheless.

If we were dealing with supporters of conservatives past, even the most vapid (Reagan, Romney) or goofy (Bush II), there would still be rational, reconcilable policy bases on which they could hedge themselves and by which the rest of us could say, "you know what, they may have their reasons." Those days are no more.

And, frankly, I don't even know if you voted for Trump, but you regardless perfectly epitomize the anti-pragmatic vanguard that made him possible.
