it makes sense. What does he get out of it? He'd probably have to jump weight or do a catchweight, which means going back to 147 would be difficult. Cotto would be near impossible to negotiate with, and then Spence becomes the guy that beat an over the hill legend (assuming he wins, which isn't guaranteed).

Better to stick at 147 and try to get Thurman

Considering GB was only going to give Mikey the fight if he signed with them, who knows what they were trying to put over on Spence.

I think Cotto vs Spence is a great matchup. I think it's a winnable fight for Cotto.

This is good for Cotto's sake.

Spence would have permanently ended his career

A worse beatdown than Margarito I.

    That isn't possible.

Margacheato had the perfect balance of lack of speed and lack of power to make Cotto take inhuman amounts of damage through the course of the fight. It was the plaster in his fists that did the work. Not enough to knock him out cold and he wasn't fast enough to land enough punches to stop him early. It was like clubbing a seal with a tee ball bat. Death by a thousand slow balls.

That wouldn't happen with a guy like Spence. He hits too hard and too fast to inflict that kind of slow burn damage over the course of an entire fight. I think Spence wins by KO but it would be abrupt and brutal. Not torturous and drawn out.

Upon reading @The Can Opener 's response I'm going to amend my previous statement...

it's going to be quick...and brutal..

I would easily have Spence at -500

Meh. Spence has beaten a guy who jumped up and down two weight classes with a broken face and Chris Algeiri. Cotto is a whole different level than those two.

Cotto doesn't have the speed nor chin to keep up with Spence...

    and I love Cotto...

I could be wrong...but I'm going to respectfully disagree with you on this one.

Cotto was a great fighter. He's old now. Spence has too much speed and length and power and skill. It's the exact wrong style for Cotto. Anyone who tries to brawl or fight inside with Cotto will have trouble. An outside fighting speedster will pick him apart similar to how Floyd did it. Yes Floyd was on a different level than Spence but Cotto is a few levels lower now so lesser guys than Floyd can do the same thing to this version of Cotto.

Styles make fights. In his prime Cotto/Spence would have been an amazing fight. 10 years later not so much.

I think Cotto could still give Spence plenty of issues and it would be a fight that I'd like to see. Tough to say what GBP really offered, though.

You really want Cotto's retirement fight to be with Spence?

He's 36 years old. He's been in the ring taking punches for 17 years. He almost got killed by a guy with loaded gloves. He really deserves a soft touch man. Or at least a fight he should win.

Cotto had a competitive fight with Canelo, you guys really think Spence is THAT much better? I like Spence, and he could win, but knocking out Cotto doesn't actually seem that likely to me.

It has nothing to do with being better. It's all about the style. Cotto and Canelo are made for each other and would always be a good fight. Look how Floyd had Cotto hurt badly three times in their fight even though he doesn't have much power. If you can stick and move and counter Cotto from the outside you can fuck him up badly. Spence would do what Floyd did except Cotto is 5 years older and Spence hits a lot harder.

Yes he did because GBP wanted to own the rights to Mikey for several fights afterwards. It was a shit deal for him and Cotto would have murdered him anyway.

Still hilarious. But I know what you're saying. Where's he making more money? At the... toilet... store...?

I don't disagree with this sentiment, at all, I'm just saying that it would hypothetically interest me. Cotto has earned the right to fight anyone he wants at this stage in his career, but I do think he still has a bit in the tank.
