So did Punk not bring in many PPV buys?

It's CM punk.

If you're selling big PPV numbers, you need to bring something special. Either be a charismatic mouthpiece like Connor who you know will bring a very exciting fight due to his style, or a downright freak of nature like Lesnar with a pre-existing following for the circus aspect. CM punk doesn't bring either of these, especially when he got embarassed the first time around.

I watched the first time CM Punk fought even though I had never even heard of him until he came to MMA. The second time around I skipped the fight.

It worked for a one time freak show fight, but for a consistent draw I have just about zero interest.

I agree. 25 years ago we paid for music and porn to ridiculous sums. Eventually the internet changed that.

I'd argue, though, that it's not just the PPV model that's failing, but rather the cable TV model entirely. People are "cutting cable cords" in record numbers, and switching to an internet service only. It's only a matter of time before cable TV moves to some kind of online service. I don't buy UFC PPVs because I don't have and don't watch cable TV.

Now, the PPV model is also not working well, as people just aren't willing to shell out $70+ to buy an event -- not unless it is at the level of Mayweather, or for the UFC McGregor or GSP. The UFC should probably switch to free broadcasts on multiple media platforms for most of their events, and only sell PPV/onDemand for a select few STACKED cards each year. They'd make much more money that way.

And when I say stacked, I mean having a full 5 fight main card + 5 fight free TV prelim with only top 10-15 fighters & at least 2 anticipated title fights (no wMMA). For example, I'd say UFC 226 is the minimum level of stacked the UFC should have to offer a PPV event. Any less and they'd be better off running a free TV event.
I've cut my cord 10 years ago. No more cable tv. I only pay for internet. My internet company keeps trying to sell me cable tv or a streaming service 24/7. Never looked back. I ordered a Bellator ppv from YouTube for crying out loud. I have Netflix through a shared subscription. Other stuff in just torrent etc.

CM Punk exposed his fighting ability in his first UFC fight.

If the internet keeps buzzing about Phil, he might just get another fight on the maincard.

Don't think that's how it works but sure

If he did get another fight that would be the final hilarious nail in any kind of career he could have afterward

I’m surprised they expected good numbers at all to be honest.

-4 Years removed from WWE career
-Obliterated in his first fight by a nobody (at the time)
-Didn’t take another fight for 2 years

CM Punk was never going to be a Brock Lesnar. At least in Brock’s first fight with Mir, he looked to be dominating a former champion until getting caught in the submission. Punk got blown away In the first minute by a guy no one had even heard of in Mickey Gall, didn’t even look like he stood a chance. No one cared to see him in there again because he showed nothing that would make us think his 2nd fight would go any better.
Didn’t Brock at least have a win outside the ufc first?

When they first announced CM Punk was coming to the UFC, I honestly had no idea who he was.

Read up a bit about him, realized I still didn't care and moved on.

Some gimmicks work. This was was clearly going to fail.

Yea, that's the future. I think the UFC is in an awkward spot where cable hasn't fully died, so these online "On Demand" buy-per-view distribution methods aren't penetrating the market like they need. However, cable is dying, so cable also isn't penetrating enough of a market now. Because of that, they need to sell things on both "On Demand" and PPV distribution methods. That in turn creates an issue with pricing: Because of the outdated PPV model, the UFC needs to charge $60-70+ to make a profit, but that's far too expensive for "On Demand" services.

The UFC could probably sell far more views if they lowered their price point to $20-30 per purchase for some of their online On Demand shows. However, that wouldn't jive with PPV, which would still need to be $60-70 per purchase. I think once the PPV model fully dies and everything is purchased online On Demand through apps, then the UFC will be able to adjust their price per event better. A UFC 225 event might only be $30-40 in value, but a McGregor event might sell at $80-100.

Nobody could save Gay Jesus v Whittaker and Cringey Colby vs RDA.

Join date doesn't mean anything, but every day we see threads that say the UFC is dying.

The UFC is not dying because no one wanted to see CM Punk lose a second time.

Punk should’ve used his wife to hype up this fight. Wrestling fans LOVE his wife.
