all that stupid machine had to do is postpone judgement day by a few decades. Wait to do it until John Connor is too old to lead any rebellion. Checkmate.

Instead of sending back someone to harm the Conners, Skynet should have sent someone back to help the Conners. Send someone back to act as a philanthropist mentor to Sarah Conner. Go into business with her, use their money to set Sarah up as upper middle class and watch John Conner grow up to be a socially-maladjusted internet troll who only knows how to resist imaginary conspiracy theories and who's only weapon is Pepe the Frog and who's only ability to lead is his ability to motivate thousands of sperm troopers into his palm.

Then if the resistance tried to send someone back to stop Skynet, they would have had to convince Sarah that she should remain a struggling single mom instead of building a better life for her and her son.
 
You are all wrong anyway. By Skynet sending anTerminstor back to do anything, it forced John Conner to send back Kyle Reese who then fucked Linda Hamilton and made John. If Skynet just did nothing in the first place, John would not have been born.

But skynet wouldn't know to not do anything until it sent the first terminator back anyway.

that terminator failed, so it tried again in T2. THAT is when skynet should've had the backup plan and programmed Robert Patrick to, if he failed to kill John Conor, to wait a few years until 97, hook up with the 97 skynet, and tell it to wait a few decades before launching judgement day.

It couldn't have. But after the terminator failed to kill Sarah Conor in T1, it sent another to get John in T2. THAT'S the terminator it should have programmed with a backup plan, should it have failed. Skynet should've programmed Robert Patrick to, if he fails to get John, then walk around for awhile until 97, link up with Skynet, and tell it to do a holding pattern for a few decades. Then it would win.
