Sherdog Official Gaming Laptop Discussion Thread (New Desktop-class NVIDIA 10 Series GPUs Available)

hey guys, wanted to ask a quick question of whether you think this laptop on ebay is worth the money. I need a pretty decent one to use whilst travelling, but I still wanna be able to play decent graphical games on it. not had a chance to do much research into it as I simply don't have the time right now. any help would be much appreciated.

it's only got a day left so I'm tempted to put a bid in if the bids don't go much higher.

I'm wary of used laptops especially ones that already have damage. 4K on a 13" laptop is a huge waste and ontop of that video card won't be able to play anything at 4K.

I got the 17" version of this laptop but with 8GB RAM for a $500 a couple months back when HP was doing preorders. If you call their customer support and file a claim to return it, they'll give you a $50 credit to reconsider. Pretty good system overall for the price. Plays all of my AAA games at a medium to high and it won't break the bank.

cheers guys, I didn't get it in the end, I think it hit like £450 which I thought was way too much. I bought a older similar laptop a couple years ago, the graphics card was the previous model to this one, and it's fantastic quality (never had a proper laptop before let alone a decent gaming one) but mine has a larger screen which I don't really want to downsize from much if at all thinking about it.

There's something in the description that would make me suspicious. It says what type of thermal paste was used. I've never seen a manufacturer ever mention what brand of thermal paste was used. That would make me think he took it apart and reapplied the thermal paste, which leads to more questions. Did he do it because it was overheating on him? Did he put it back together right?
It may be fine, but considering the above and the negative feedback that was left on him as a seller within the last month, I'd look elsewhere.
If you decide to go for it, you should be fine for medium settings @30fps @1080p on newer games.
Since it's a 13 inch and has a crack, I wouldn't much higher than what's listed. Maybe another 25 pounds but that's it.

thanks for the feedback. the arctic past is definitely not a replacement, my laptop has it too, pcspecialist do custom built laptops and they are pretty decent tbh, good value for money, the more the custom choices the more nerds geek out. my current one is bigger than the one i linked and it gets pretty hot, but if you ventilate the bottom it's good to go. his is smaller so it may heat up more which put me off a bit. he does have a fan cooling tray that looks pretty cool so I think it would be ok with that. I was aiming about the price you said but it went way higher, it's just not worth it with the crack too. it could of been used intensively also, I'm gonna look elsewhere. i'll check out the one naramie linked too.

The price for the HP 15t and 17t with the 2GB GTX 1050 (non-Ti) are constantly changing because of sales promos. Right now it doesn't look like it's on sale ($849) and it is almost the same price as the Envy model which is nicer. But a few days ago it was going for around $649 which is a good price. HP recently changed the default config to be 6GB of DDR instead of 8GB DDR, so now you have to pay a $30 upgrade to have the 8GB DDR. If it comes back at the $649 price point again it's worth a look, it's the cheapest laptop that you can find with a GTX 1050. Performance wise the GTX 1050 is some where in between the GTX 960M and 970M from the previous gen. It doesn't have an SSD but the 1TB HD is a 7K RPM drive not a 5K like you see in most budget systems so it's fairly pretty quick. I was originally planning to install an SSD but the 7K drive boot up time was fast enough for me. You have 30 days to try it out starting on the day it was delivered and if you don't like it HP will pay the postage to ship it back to them.

You can also sign up for the HP Friends and Family Discount that will shave a $30-40 bucks off depending on the model and configuration. There's also the $50 credit that they'll give you if you ask about returning it later on.

The ultrathin Predator Triton 700 gaming laptop is Acer’s answer to the Razer Blade

The laptop itself was fantastic. It weighed 2.6 kilograms and could be held with one hand (though it felt weighty) -- and that's an achievement in gaming laptops. At 18.9 millimeters thick, or 0.74 inches, Acer boasted that the Triton 700 was among the thinnest gaming laptops, outperforming the 2016 Razer Blade and rivals. For reference, Apple’s nongaming-focused MacBook Pro is 0.61 inches thick, while the more comparable Razer Blade is 0.7 inches.

But the Triton 700 price is pretty fat. It will start shipping in August and is priced at starting at USD $2,999 for the U.S. market and €3,399 for the Europe, Middle East and Africa markets.
The oversized touchpad is also transparent, giving a glimpse into cooling components of the laptop, like its unique AeroBlade cooling fan. That design was inspired by transparent gaming desktops, and it is something gamers will love, said Eric Ackerson, senior product and marketing manager at Acer.

Using the transparent touchpad, which is made of Gorilla Glass, felt a little strange. It took a few minutes to get oriented with the idea of using a trackpad over a keyboard. The trackpad uses the standard multitouch features of Windows 10, which can be customized for games.

Notebookcheck observes that a 3DMark score of 17,000 is just slightly above their 16,200 average running the full-sized GTX 1070 desktop GPU. They speculate that this new GPU is likely the reduced power consumption "Max-Q" version of the GTX 1080 that sacrifices performance to lower the heat.

This is the unit I was thinking of buying.. Does this seem like a fair price for the hardware on display?? Or could I get something with similar specs at a cheaper price?

If you have not done so already, you may want to pose this question in the video game forum. If I recall correctly, they had threads about making your own computer builds and the like. Seems like those folks would be able to help you out.

Having a 4K resolution screen at only 15.6 inches is a huge waste of money, you'd be better off just getting a 1080p screen.

The 1070 also isn't really cut out or 4K gaming either, you might get away with low settings at 30-40 fps but for that money why would you ever do that.

Why a laptop? You plan to move it around a lot?

I totally agree. You get far more for your money with a desktop PC and you have a lot more options for upgrading it.

Additionally I think AMD and Intel are preparing to enter into a price war due to the new CPUs they are releasing, and I would expect a large drop in these older chips. It may be worth waiting.

dude for that money you can get a Desktop gaming rig and a good laptop if you need it to move around with

As someone stated earlier, 4k in that small of a screen is pointless. The desktop 7700k seems like a waste IMO, it's going to thermal throttle like crazy in a laptop when you OC it.
64gb of ram is waaay overkill, 16 is plenty. $35 for IC diamond thermal paste is ridiculous, a tube is $8 and will do multiple cpu & gpu applications.

Nothing too fancy. I decided on going on a vacation every 6 months and to a different country every time to kill boredom/depression. I needed a gaming laptop I can take with me to play WoW on. Also, games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim. I have a good gaming PC at home, so I'm not too worried about it being able to play the most graphic intensive games at 1200 FPS.

Bought it on Amazon just now. It's gonna take a week for it to arrive.

Did you get the i7 or i5 version? The former will make a big difference in a lot of the MMO and other multiplayer games like those you mentioned (or Arma 3 or Planetside 2 on the shooter side), but the downside is that i7's always seem to create more heat problems than i5's despite the same TDP.

I assume you got the 15". The fucking trays on airplanes these days are so goddamn short. Hell, even the 15" laptops are too big to comfortably seat and open them on those trays, now. Everyone went to 13" and ultrabooks/convertibles/tablets/smartphones, so the airlines don't care.

I got the i7 version and has the 17" screen. I didn't opt to upgrade from the 1050 to the 1050ti, though.

Son of a bitch. This is why I hate buying shit online. I fucking hate waiting for shit to arrive.

The i7 + 1050 might very well be superior for your gaming demands. Perhaps more importantly, the i7 will prove longer in the tooth with regard to general computing relevance.
