I grabbed a free 300 lb set off craigslist and it came with a 'Schisler' brand olympic bar. And by Olympic bar, I mean size-wise. Not sure if it's more a power bar or real olypmic bar for olympic lifts.

Not looking a gift horse in the mouth but curious what I have here, the internet seems silent on the issue, which has piqued my curiosity. Seems incredibly solid, deep knurling, smooth collar spin.

Is it more K-Mart "Gold's Gym" brand or more Texas Power? Or somewhere in the middle?

Either I misspelled earlier or the search function on this site is a schizo.

I found the following post by Mr. Wassung, which is recent, funny and answers my question pretty well.

Yes, Its called the Wassung-Shin Rating system

load a bar with 45's. now walk into the bar and bend your right leg do that your lower leg is tucked behind you and is parallel to the floor. Squat down and lower your shinbone right on top of the knurling. Now keeping your bare shin on the bar, move your leg/shin back and forth on the bar and observe the following

Wassung/Shin 1-10 rating System

No observable pain or irritation- 1-3 Weider, Sears, any bar that "comes with" 300lbs

Minor Pain, skin abrasion 4-5 Chinese Yorks, Standard, Eurosport, BFS, Marcy

Severe Pain, minor bleeding, 6-7 Ivanko, Schisler, Jessup, Troy, Pendlay, Vintage York

Major Bleeding, exposed flesh, 8-10 Eleiko, Chapman, Texas Power Bar

I'll be happy with the result of this 'transaction'

Keith Wassung mentions them in this post; it's in good company in the category it's it. I think the company is now defunct. Congrats on getting a good deal!

Edit: dammit, beat me to it...

I got one of them new fangled Pendlay Nexgen HDs and the knurling is no deeper than my cheapo. I could rub my shin on it all day. Cause for concern?

Interesting. I have an old-gen Pendlay and the knurling is very sharp and defined.

It feels smooth, but it hasn't caused any grip problems, so far. It doesn't really make a difference because the bar is cursed, anyway.

Did you buy it from this guy?

The knurling on a Pendlay has a finer pitch than a power bar. Because the knurl is rolled (formed) and not cut, a given pitch of a knurl can only be so deep before the steel tops out on the rolls when it's made. So, while Hunto observed his knurling to be sharp and defined, WL said his is no deeper than on a cheapo bar. Both of these statements can be true of the same bar.

Also, I agree with Fatty about pulling with a Pendlay being preferable to a bar with coarser knurling.

I've never heard of the bar that the OP is talking about, but Keith listed it in a group with other bars of good quality.
But Keith also put Jessup and Pendlay in the same category for shin pain, which is just ridiculous. The old man has gone mad.
