Not going to lie, after his fight with Maynard, I never wanted to see him again.

That submission on BJ Penn is not getting the credit it deserves. Yes, BJ is done, shot, kaput, it's over, please retire but he subbed a guy who was never close to being subbed in his entire career and Hall did it easily with a very rare submission for MMA and the way he sprung to that leg after a visible slip on the mat was damn impressive.

Blew my mind. I went from absolutely despising him to complete respect and am interested to see his next fight. I do worry he is the type of guy that can lead to a bunch of boring fights though.

I was surprised at how bad BJ's leglock defense was

I know Hall's got insane jitz but fucking hell, BJ rolled the completely wrong way to defend that heel hook. If he'd spun away from Hall's grip instead of rolling towards it without slipping his heel, he actually might've escaped that.

Makes you realise how fast BJJ has evolved in the past decade, BJ won the world championships in his prime but even that version of BJ would get mopped up by any of the elite leglockers from DDS in No gi.

Hell, prime BJ would probably get submitted by 17 year old Nicky Ryan, who's actually smaller than him

Really want to see Hall vs Kron, I think it makes sense in terms of styles, their standings, both coming off subs of old legends, etc.

Hall might try to bigtime him though and avoid the matchup.

I just re-watched that around an hour ago, and yes it was SO well disguised, he was bouncing around, and actually slightly moving back and he just dived on that left-leg so fast and I don't think BJ Penn saw that coming AT ALL.
Ryan Hall is a jitz specialist, and that was a very slick move.

I think Ryan spends a minute or two evaluating the movement of his opponent, their footwork etc, and after a coupla minutes, he has decided when he will take his opportunity and gets it done FAST when his opponent least expects it.
Superb technique, and a very humble guy in the post-fight interview.

If you look closely, he actually slips and improvises from slipping to just diving at Penn's leg. I believe it was his right foot that slipped and he just dove at Penn's leg from the slip and snatched the sub. It was crazy and I don't think is getting the attention it deserved because of Nunes and Jon.

I don't follow straight BJJ enough to know but I will take your word for it.

It was still pretty slick and I imagine very few guys in MMA can pull off subs like that, that quick.

yeah you're right : his right foot slipped backwards and he dived on the front leg. Anyone who fights Ryan Hall, needs to have a plan on how to deal with that. There's very few fighters who seem to be excellent at applying leg-locks. If you get it right it's basically a guaranteed sub.

Ryan Hall, gets the win, against a big name, and takes zero damage. Smart guy.

Incredible Heel Hook. Very impressive.

Hope BJ is not badly injured.

Totally agree that Hall should fight Kron next. That fight could either be incredible or a total snoozefest.

Imanari (What Hall did was named after Imanari after all...the guy @Zer's av) and Palhares comes to mind. Leglocks ain't nothing to fuct with. I don't throw the dice with it even in sparring.

I always wanted to see Ryan against Ortega.

I've bashed Hall at every chance I get and even on twitter to a point he responded to me. However, after that sub over BJ I can't deny how great his bjj is. It was incredible

It happened really fast and got locked in almost immediately.
BJ had no time to think.

yeah you KNOW it's a bad-ass submission when the other guy IMMEDIATELY taps. He didn't fight it at all, it was just "stop now FFS".

He got a performance bonus of 50k. Thats a lot of credit right there.

I love BJ but maybe they shouldn't have rushed him to black belt.

That rises once again the question of BJ's preparation and work ethic. He wasn't submitted because he's too old or too slow, but indeed because he turned the wrong way at Hall's first serious attempt. Penn knew what was coming and didn't seem to have trained for it. When he beat Palhares on the ground, Belcher showed that you can prepare for such ultra specialists, even when you are not known for your BJJ. Penn didn't train properly.
