BERLIN (AP) — At least 1,259 people working for the Protestant Church of Germany have committed sexual abuse in the last decades and at least 2,225 victims were affected by the abuse according to an independent report published Thursday.

The numbers are based on the study of documents and files from the regional churches and the Lutherans’ diaconal relief and social welfare organization, known as Diakonie.

However, the authors said they were not able to analyze the personnel files of all pastors and deacons within the church, but primarily disciplinary files. They estimated that the real number of perpetrators is much higher, with nearly 3,500 people who have committed sexual abuse, German news agency dpa reported.

“It’s the tip of the tip of the iceberg,” said Martin Wazlawik from Hannover University, who coordinated the study on sexualized violence in the Protestant Church in

I hope all the guilty ones will receive just punishment.

P.s. Damn, that's fucked up!!!

I wonder how the abuse in church compares to other institutions where an adult is given unsupervised access to children. Schools, camps, orphanages, children’s psych hospitals, Mosques, Temples, etc.

Is it comparable or is there something exceptional about churches?

its crazy how the Kids are safer at Drag shows than at church.
But they're not. These cases aren't substantiated, and you've offered no comparative figures. That church comprises 19.2 million members, and it peaked above 20 million members during the studied date range. You have just over 3,500 alleged sexual abuse victims spanning over three quarters of a century.

It sounds way the hell lower than almost any organization. If it's same timeline as the study of the catholic church in Germany, which was from 1946, this averages about 30 victims/year and 17 perpetrators in an organization of 20 million.

Public schools are laughing at this amateur hour, and passing that 7 decade total on a monthly basis.

Any number that isn't 0 means it's time to lock some people up, or even better get some of that medieval weaponry they sell at home depot now and give the dads a free afternoon with the perpetrators, but this shows the opposite of what TS thought it did, and evidently the rate of sexual abuse on the church is quite a lot lower than the general population or almost any other organization with a substantial number of children.
