Reagan did provide amnesty but he also signed laws that were supposed to protect us from illegals and companies who hire illegals. Its not his fault everyone decided to ignore the law and no one enforced it.

People always forget that when they mention Reagan offered amnesty to illegal immigrants.

The big problem with amnesty is that it encourages criminal behavior. Granting amnesty to illegal immigrants will always greatly increase illegal immigration in the future, regardless of how many laws are signed.

Reagan made mistakes.

Trump was bold enough to not just copy Reagan. Even moreso than Democrats giving Reagan a free pass on mistakes. Trump is more likely than any pussy current Democrat to say Reagan was wrong on "issue X".

There was clearly a difficulty in messaging enough not to alienate Reagan people.

Reagan was wrong on gun control & other issues as well. Just because Reagan wrote a little letter doesn't mean his heart or brain was in it.

AG Edwin Meese said Reagan regretted some decisions he made.
