Ramon Dekkers Highlight

The whole 'dekkers brought boxing to thailand' myth is even funnier when you remember that he actually lost to Den Muangsurin in an amateur boxing match.

He was a good fighter and fun to watch but I don't think ive ever seen another fighter get their achievements blown out of proportion like his have been.

thats a good find, i never saw that fight.

Damien Trainor said that Dekkers was a huge inspiration for him.

Sherdog is the only place that I have ever heard of people not holding him in high regards.

the thais boxing looks alot like muay thai fighters that are only punching, rather than pure boxing, at least from what I have seen, which is very little.

MMA and boxing are popular in much of the world, which means people have taken the time to get a sense of the history, and outright bullshit is quickly dismissed. This is why people aren't running with the belief that Darnell Boone and Kazuyuki Fujita are all-time greats. Muay Thai is not popular, nor is it well understood, therefore it can be easy to get away with folklore (bullshit), and what happens when that folklore is bred and passed around by white people? The white guy becomes the greatest hero.

you make a good point. although your comment towards "white" people sounds a little derogatory.

being the first foreigner to go over there and compete with the top thais is part of the reason for the hype. Not simply because he was white, but because he was the first foreigner to do it. Kinda like how the world made a big deal about tiger woods, great golfer, but got alot of hype not just for his skill, but also cause he was the first black top golfer. the same comparison could be made for james stewart being the first top level black mx racer. the next top level black mx racer is not going to get as much publicity as James Stewart did because hes not the first to do it.

It's funny when I read comments on youtube or on the reddit mma or muaythai pages where users will come up with their own myths to add to it. I was reading one comment about how thais kick more now days because they had to adapt to foreigners like dekkers knocking them out with punches, this was an upvoted comment on a muay thai subreddit. I see a bit of it with Raymond Daniels at the moment after he got the Rogan rub, comments about how he's beaten all the muay thai fighters he's faced and that he's a kickboxing legend.

I hold him in high regard personally since he was an exciting fighter that actually went to thailand and competed against some of the best fighters ever in the sport. I'm just realistic about what he achieved. Same with guys like Pornsanae or Bovy, who are some of my favourites to watch but were flawed fighters themselves.

yeah man its funny becaus alot of people that like dekkers fighting style also like mike tyson. Damien trainor said he liked both those fighters alot. They are my 2 favorite fighters. and ramon dekkers also said he liked tyson alot as well. I just liked their aggressive powerful style. A fighter today that is similar could maybe be Robin Van Roosmalen.

the same thing could probably be applied to mayweather being the best ever

what happens when that folklore is bred and passed around by black people? The black guy becomes the greatest hero.

Mayweather, whether he's the best ever or not, is at least closer to the top in his sport than Dekkers in his. The second part is a bit different here because the "greatest hero" in boxing is still a black fighter (Robinson or Ali depending on what kind of crowd you ask) even if it's not Mayweather.

Mayweather actually is one of the all time greats though and if you try and fabricate thing about him you'll get called out on it because a lot of people have watched his fights. Casual fans will be duped all the time but in terms of people that actually follow the sport then it's harder to fabricate things. The thing with muay thai is that there isn't a large group of hardcore fans to call out bs so promoters or whoever can easily twist the truth and people will buy it.

Mayweather has an incredible record and is an all time great. But what would his record be if he fought maidana in Argentina or castiilo in Mexico. Even the great Ray Robinson was known for negotoating ring size against pressure fighters etc
What i am saying is you can pick holes against any fighter even the best.
And i am not saying dekkers is even the best foreigner ever but what he achieved and the trail he blazed is special.
