Over 10 years ago, I herniated L5. When it happened, I knew it. Massive pain went down the right leg. Numbness, tingling, couldnt move my big toe, and couldnt sit in a seated upright position without pain for longer than 7 sec. Went through a fucking year of therapy. I was released and allowed to deadlift and squat again.

Since then, Ill feel a back 'pop' here and there, followed by muscles tensing up around where ever the pop would arise. Id immediately stop doing what I am doing, usually seek a doc. Then theyd go through the gambit of disc tests. I rest, recover, then come back to the gym. This was likely due to a QL spasm or injury.

Feb 15 was on the left side, not the right like years ago.

My question is, how the fuck would you know the difference? I dont have shooting pain like I did with the L5 injury, but I have it sometimes. QL has similar symptoms, but is a night and day difference or quite similar?

Primary doc visit is Thur and specialist is the next Thur. Not fucking around this time, hence the stock question sent out to Sherdog to ease or panic me more.

Cheers

Anyone ever use these?

That looks like a device you could sodomize yourself with, which is appropriate for this thread.

The "sniff test" is this -- if your thread is about how something hurts bad, and you should see a doctor about it, but instead you're asking people on the internet (sorry but this especially applies to asking the doctor-wannabe's here because they will actually dole out advice having never met you or properly diagnosed the issue) then you have made an error and should ask the mods to delete your thread.

No. I already have doc appointments.

There's nothing wrong with asking people whom have had weightlifting injuries and since have returned to working out. Let the adults talk.

What do you hope to accomplish? Do you expect useful advice? How would you possibly trust it? Have you spent any time on the internet? There's ten times as much bad information as good.

Or you're looking for a support group to commiserate with you, which is fine, but this isn't it. This isn't the Owies forum. We're here to talk about performance. That's why there's a "Guide and forbidden topics" sticky, which states "Injury threads. Don't ask the internet what you should ask a doctor. Discussing injury prevention, or dealing with minor aches and pains is acceptable. Threads asking for a diagnosis or advice on treatment are not allowed."

So now go ahead and talk about returning to working out. But leave the medical questions out of it. Go see your doc next Thursday and follow his advice, and while you're at it, print this thread out and bring it to him, see what he thinks of it. See if he thinks your going to the mma forum for advice is a good idea. If you're going to make "adult" comments, man up and let your doc know what you're up to.

That's a thread I'd like to read -- how that conversation goes.

Again, lets not be argumentative.

Call it a means to ask someone how they returned to working out from a similar ailment so to give me an idea of what im looking into ahead. My question is specific, the difference in QL impairment and disc trouble.

My actual advice would be to wait, get the doctor's advice, come back here and announce that you're going to follow that advice and get in fantastic shape, and then open a training log to keep yourself accountable to that promise.

Wait before what, making a thread? Its a forum. A discussion about an injury that occurs in weight training and fighting.

I am forced to wait anyway. There is nothing wrong for asking for some advice, especially when it comes to the QL, as ive not had that injury before (or perhaps i have).

Remember, some doctors will just say to stop working out altogether. Im seeing the primary tomorrow and a specialist a week from then.

If you cant help, dont.

The doctor probably isn't gonna know much.

I don't know what kind of imaging you need to determine a disc problem.

Physical therapists will probably help you the most here. They can tell you what to avoid and what to strengthen while you recover.

Thats the idea.

When i had my disc problem, i did physical therapy for..shit, months. But i did get cleared to deadlift/squat. It wasnt until i came to college that these 'pops' kept occurring.

Primary doc advised in feb 15 to do physical therapy because "your body will heal, but not properly." Since i reinjured a rested injury, i am giving in and declaring he was right and im wrong.

Looked up some QL rehab and theres not much..

You may have to find a different way to work out. I know it stinks.

But anyway, good luck to you and your recovery. I know it's not fun.

A QL spasm doesn't case pain/numbness down the legs.

It is also located higher and more laterally than the L5 vertebra.

Not a "night and day difference" but it might be possible for you to understand (and for sure possible for a doc to diagnose).

Thats what i thought. Pain down the leg means sciatica. But, shit, every time i search pain from a QL, the pain pics found are around my ass. Ill see if i can post the pic exactly after this. I dont have the pain shooting down my leg like it did years ago. I did say "sometimes," but the pain i feel going down my leg is nothing like the pain in my ass.

Primary doctor is thinking the nerve is getting pinched and it doesnt necessarily disc related. Always thought if you had sciatica then it means a disc is herniated, bulged, or ruptured. Ill ask the specialist the same questions.

I can squat ass to grass, but standing back up causes pain in left cheek.
