Is there a consensus on what the best way to pull guard is without a gi? Is underhooks your only real option? Much more difficult to get underhooks than to grab lapels when starting from the ground.

Could do the Aoki flying guard pull or on a failed single or double just falling back and pulling guard you can do. Underhooks aren't always a necessity as there more for keeping flat off your back

When I pull guard which isn't often in no gi I just sit to open guard, I was never into that jumping to close guard stuff.

I don't do it, but I'd rather have an overhook if I'm going to closed guard.

Underhooks? When pulling closed guard no gi? One hand on back of neck, other on tricep.

Depends what type of guard you want to play.

For closed guard you're gonna have to get a collar tie or underhooks and jump. Beware though, he might stay standing with you hugging him like a koala. You gotta have a gameplan for how to take him down if this happens. Try to get underhooks and trip him for example.

For butterfly guard, underhooks.

For open guard you can just sit down. You don't have to establish grips before buttscooting in no-gi. Grab at least an ankle if you can, though.

For half guard (esp. deep half guard) you can just dive right in and hook a leg a la Jeff Glover.

pretty sure in IBJJF rules you still need grips

How come?

So you can go right into your attack. I actually cracked up when I saw Maia vs Jason MacDonald, and MacDonald's tries to get double underhooks on Maia....so Demian is like, "Thanks, bro!", takes the overhook, pulls guard, and promptly makes a tight triangle attempt.

Solid overhook would be hard to get without baiting, and risking being legitimately taken down, but it would be the optimal way to go if you could do it. Collar and elbow tie is probably the surest bet.

You don't neccessarily have to jump. If you step on both of his feet and than sit to closed down guard your opponent will fall down comically. If you are explosive with it ( the "double foot stomp") you can even get a nogi elevator sweep from the get go. You can have any grip as long as you use both hands. Collar tie. underovers, double unders, double overs, even double wrist control. You don't have to even be secure in any of them. You just have to have a point of contact.

The only problem with this is that in nogi, someone would have to be tricked into taking a bad stance for this to happen. In gi, judo guys keep this stance all the time, but in nogi grappling not so much. It's actually really easy to force someone into this stance with good fundamentals like collar tie control, double underhooks and head positioning, but in order to do that you actually need to understand basic takedowns and the kind of people who want to pull guard are the people least likely to do so.

Bottom line: Learn how takedowns work and you will be able to pull guard much more effectively.

I get a 2 on 1 and sit down with my foot on the hip. Then immediately tripod sweep or play De La Riva.

I shoot a single, if it gets stuffed, I'll keep hold of that leg and sit back into single leg guard or pull them into HG.

This is my gi and nogi guard pulling strategy.
