Welliver stops Roundstone in Montana

After two years of inactivity, former WBC Continental Americas heavyweight title holder Chauncy “The Hillyard Hammer” Welliver (56-12-5, 23 KOs) made his return to the ring on Friday night at the Civic Center in Butte, Montana, making short work of the thoroughly outmatched Ruben Roundstone (0-3), stopping him in the opening round of a scheduled six.
Welliver, of Spokane, Washington, dropped Roundstone early on with a left hook to the body. After another body shot put him down again, referee Russ Hansen stepped in and called it at :34 of the first round. Welliver added his 56th career win and his first victory since June of 2013.
Also on the card, Spokane’s Sean Quinnett (5-3, 2 KOs) boxed his way to a four round shutout victory over the pro debuting Jacob Fridley (0-1) in a Jr. middleweight bout. Scores were 40-36 all around.
Popular local cruiserweight Kaden LeCoure (2-0, 1 KO) notched his second win as a pro, dispatching of Aberdeen, Washington’s Andrew Howk (0-6) in the first round. LeCoure worked patiently behind his jab early in the round, stepping in with the occasional right hand. He slowly increased his aggression and, about a minute into the fight, caught Howk with a vicious right to the temple, sending him crashing to the canvas. Referee Russ Hansen hit the count of ten at 1:03.
And in a heavyweight fight, Anaconda, Montana’s Erik Hempstead (7-0, 7 KOs) scored a first round stoppage win over Casper, Wyoming’s Billy Martin (0-4). Time of the stoppage was 2:46.
