Prime Hughes vs prime (current) Khabib

Hughes gets murked.. Anyone who get smashed by Dennis Hllaman twice while Hallman was in the midst of a sketchy W/L streak, is a bum.

Then to make it worse, Hallman beats his 2nd nephew Mathias Hughes, right after.

So he’s just whooping the whole family of Hughes. Matt’s not doing anything to Khabibby

Hughes slams him at the back of the barn and serves Khabib and all American country breakfast.

Cherry picking individuals =/= a whole generation evolved over the prior generation.

If that was true no one from the prior generations would be able to compete with successive ones.

With the sport growing we are certainly to see the odd break through fighter. that again =/= the entire sport evolving.
Otherwise in a couple of years we should expect to see a LHW that prime Jones could never compete with.

I think because the sport is so young people have a warped perception of how it has changed. The early days there were tough guys and specialists, but those early days really went from the beginning until the end of the 90’s. guys like Frank Shamrock who were good in multiple areas were the exception until not very long ago. But since cross-trained guys became common during the 00’s the skill level has (in my estimation) somewhat plateaued.

Hughes at his prime had a decent sub game, excellent top game and somewhat improved striking. He was absurdly strong, too. I think he matches up well with Khabib’s clinching style and would find himself on top. Since we haven’t seen Khabib on the bottom I have no dea what he looks like, and we also have no idea if Khabib has peaked yet. But at this point I’d take prime Hughes over Khabib.

Agreed.

The biggest difference in MMA now as opposed to then is the infrastructure for training MMA and living an entire MMA life. Back in the day most fighters, who were not the top guys needed a second job. Now few do and even the middling guys can make a life in MMA, from gyms and training and other MMA activities.

But what has changed is that everyone is reasonable well rounded so the easy fights are mostly gone. But specialists still exist. Maia is a specialist and so is Khabib who is really no more well rounded than Hughes was.

Unfortunately the level of athlete has not really changed in MMA, which will really be the first big evolution in MMA. When HIgh School age A-level athletes who have other choices (Football, Basketball, other) start instead streaming towards a career in MMA then that will be the first true evolution of the sport.

its almost still the same.

You have far more young guys who like Rory grow up doing nothing but MMA. Lots of guys like at TAM who have access to training all day, everyday. Lots of guys whose only jobs, such as in MMA gyms keep them in that environment and give them access to non stop training.

Plus, MMA has come far since then. Let's not forget BJ beat a prime Hughes.

That doesn't really say much, I've been watching since 2003. Your last post was embarassing.

Quite a few people in here agree with me. It’s a difference of opinion mate, no need to get worked up over it. There’s no way you’ve been watching that long for you to be acting in this fashion.
