Political extremes discussion: I'm sick of hearing how polarized we are

we're very polarized today. however....

several political leaders were shot in 1968.

we had a F'ing civil war.

some of our founders had a duel to the death.

so no....not the MOST polarized we've ever been.

A brief, opinionated discussion of the subject. Because the recent SC hearings bruhaha have so many pundits chanting that "we're more polarized than we've ever been!!"

No, we fucking aren't. I've been hearing that for four DECADES.

@HomerThompson you know my threads are awesome

Blame the media fella.

In the 1980's news media were divided and owned by upwards of 60 different corporations. You eneded up getting a much broader range of news, and less of an agenda.

Today news networks are owned by I think 3 corporations. The majority being left leaning.

Before trump was even sworn into office, the media were already full steam ahead in turning trump into a swear word and those who considered themselves conservative, were sexist, racists white men.

If you honestly think that sounds like democracy...you are fucking insane.

I've never hated the left leaning media more, or the democratic party who ironically has the most undemocratic electoral system between the two.

I don't give a fuck how handsome, charming or well spoken their electorate is. I will NEVER vote democratic so long as they have that stupid super delegate system in place as a means of control over the votes.

I will NEVER side with democrats so long as the majority left leaning media stops vilifying conservatives.

I used to laugh at fox news...and now it's like all the left have gone into over drive out fox newsing fox news with fake news.

I know they story you refer to. Please respond to my witty comeback in the Manafort Pleas, Thank You thread!

I’m good, your 8 quotes have left me thoroughly disinterested. Thanks anyway.

Looking from the outside, the US seems sufficiently divided to become two different natiions.

I don't think the polarization is new, but I think the lack of respect for opposing views is at an all time high.

Forget? Hell no!

Internet makes things (and people) seem bigger than they really are. I mean look at Jack V. He thinks he's god, and he's an atheist.

Obviously up for debate, but we could/ should be at least five countries, imo.

Remind us, are leftist thugs currently chasing political opponents out of restaurants?
This. In much of the media, in Hollywood, in academia, and hell, even in restaurants, there is effectively a blacklist against anyone right of center.

There's always been a good deal of friction between differing political and cultural viewpoints. But we could still be on the same bowling team or whatever. However, a moral absoluteness and intolerance is increasingly characterizing our politics The people pushing that more than anyone is the progressive wing of the Dems.

However, if your point is that most Americans are far more tolerant of one another and more tolerant of diverging opinions than our political elite, I'd agree.

Outrage became a marketable commodity and we can sell advertising on both sides now.

"This small town in Germany now has a Muslim mailman!"
The Right: OMGWTF this is horrible!!!!
"President Trump literally defends rape in Kavanaugh case"
The Left: OMGWTF this is horrible!!!!

Absolutely.

Two words: outrage porn.

For the majority of folks out there (and I don't necessarily exclude myself from this, by the way) the news has become porn that you can check at work.
