I agree that there are a few safe strips of Detroit but police response times hit 58 minutes in 2013, that's if they even showed up, Detroit police probably have the only argument in the country for government employees to have a union.

A big part of the problem with policing Detroit is that the city is huge but the population has really shrunk so theres tons of abandoned shit with a real house here and there and so the police have a budget for the population but an area twice the size to cover. Youd be better off eminent domaning people so they all live in the same part of town and shrinking the area they have to patrol and respond to than you would handing the police a blank check.

Also liberal policy didnt kill detroit so much as the world changed and didnt need us to produce like we used to which made the city lose a ton of money very quickly while still having a large population and its just rotted from there. The fact that every mayor and city council member and real estate developer rips the city off every chance they get really doesnt help either. If you want to be sick to your stomach do some reading on all the money that just up and disappeared when the casinos , the ball parks , the people mover , the new barn for the wings and any other major project get greenlit. Its sick. Then they always promise to pay the city back or it will create all these jobs and profits but somehow the city never sees a dime of it.

I love the city and the people in it but it is a cesspool when it comes to the politics and I dont mean left and right I mean stealing and trading favors. It can be very frustrating at times and progress is very slow and often comes with a lot of hidden costs and setbacks that the rest of wayne county always get saddled with . I love that every election canton and livonia and the like always have some bill or proposal about some new millage or tax that will help dps or this detroit thing and people always vote it down with a hell no.

Not a hipster I dont think but raised in and around the city and into a lot of local music so im pretty familiar with the city and the metro area and rather fond of most of it good and bad alike. I take the Detroit stuff kinda personal cuz I have always felt a connection with this place and feel like Robert E Lee did about his Virginia.

'Violent crimes' in general might be a better metric for comparison.

I haven't had an issue but I have heard of quite a few places not to venture out to, especially late at night(every country has these, though my buddies said their level of aggression was quite high)
-I am going off word of mouth, my buddies lived in the UK for a few years and shared a few experiences of being told to leave certain neighborhoods;
