Why don't you start a nonprofit health insurance collective?

The way universal healthcare/insurance companies work, is to divide out healthcare costs among as many people as possible. If you do this on your own, you don't have to force it on people who don't want it AND you avoid government inefficiency.

You just take the total healthcare costs+overhead, and divide it by the number of people who joined. Everyone would be paying an equal share.

the government gets its money from taxpayers. the people could handle it themselves without involving the government at all

This is a chicken-egg problem. Providers would have no incentive to render discount from charge master / usual and customary / etc. so this collective would be paying an imaginary sticker price. The lack of network discount would keep membership low which would prevent establishing a network discount.

Alternatively, they could hire / own their providers and run like an HMO, sort of like the Kaiser Permanente model. This is an effective model but would require colossal start up costs and lobbying efforts and many doctors in the current model don't like salaried agreements.

This is not as simple as just having a few dozen to a few thousand people pooling money.

The selling point of UHC is that it creates leverage(by pooling all consumers) over the industry to control prices, without having to pass specific regulation that can be gamed.

I agree the costs are the main problem with healthcare but if enough people got into it, there would be collective bargaining, which is how European countries use UHC to keep their healthcare costs down

We are all coerced into membership, by the fact that we don't want to go bankrupt if we get sick.

This right here, is why the idea of a free market in HC is absurd. Their can be no free market, because as consumers, you literally might not be able to live without the product.

That isn't to say a private system couldn't be created that functioned, just that the principals Adam Smith espoused are not applicable here.
