Pains in hip joints when kicking...

    It's like they are growing pains, but I have been done growing for quite some time now. It's not like my muscles, tendons, etc. are inflexible, it feels like there is something wrong in the joint. Like a bone pain. I fractured my growth plate when I was 16 in my hip (I am now 18), and it feels like the same pain, only to a lesser degree.

    All the kinds of stretching aren't getting anywhere. I am flexible in my legs, back, etc... but for some reason my hip joints feel hurt so much when I do high kicks. It's been this way since I started kickboxing.

    Anybody experience this or offer some advice?

    Uh-oh. It could be several things.

    First off, have it X-Rayed and make sure it's not actually a bone problem. No need to play with that stuff.

    Secondly, it may be the type of stretching that is damaging your connective tissue. It could also be that you are not as flexible as you think, or as kickboxing requires. See one of the many stretching threads around here:

    It could easily be your form. Getting the form wrong will force your body into unnatural positions, resulting in chronic pain after a while. How long have you been doing kickboxing and how is your form? Have it looked at, proper form should feel easy and painless.

    When does the pain occur? Does it occur if you only do low kicks, or does it occur when you do kicks which require more flexibility? It is quite possible that, even if you have decent flexibility in some planes of motion, that you lack flexibility through the entire range of motion. Have somebody hold your leg as you go through the correct kicking motion in slow-mo. If you feel your joints pulling, and your muscles tightening to the point of pain at any point in the kick when done in slow motion, then you will need to increase your flexibility, because every kick will result in a similar pull on your connective tissue. Do warm up before you attempt this exercise, though.

    Finally, it is very possible that your connective tissue is not as strong as your muscles, so stretches and exercise cause micro-tears in your tendons, ligaments and muscle endings. Read this thread, for a few exercise recommendations that helped me with a similar problem (it's towards the end of the thread). In this case, do these exercises, and do stretching regularly, but NEVER to pain. If you have weak connective tissue, you'll have to build it up, and stretch gently until it catches up enough to be able to do harder stretches. But in the long run, you want to improve your flexibility, or you'll have the problem forever.

    My advice would be to immediately stop doing the highkicks, and get to a doctor for xray and possibly MRI (basically eliminate any fracture issues). Second thing would be to find a good physical therapist who can then help you strengthen up/fix whatever is going wrong.

    I've been out for 13 months now due in part to a hip injury - I made a huge mistake of trying to "train through" the problem, and it only made things massively worse and that much more damage to undo via physical therapy.

    So, learn from my mistake and get on it fast and don't try to tough it out.

    what all these guys said....
    I got the same problem.
    i kept putting it off, finally went to an orthopaedic.
    i got a bone spur/growth on the top corner of my femur. as soon as my legs split to where it comes into contact, i get a sharp pain. the growth is hitting the cartlidge in between hip socket and femur. gotta decide if shaving it off is gonna fix it permanently or if i have to give up doing anything forcing my hips into a split.

    theres so many things that could be wrong in the hip area... gotta have a competent doctor check it out.. NOT a general practitioner. mine initially said it was a pulled hip flexor and gave me some ibuprofin or some crap.
    specialists are the key to really finding out.

    I have pain in my left hip at times, I injured it playing baseball when my cleet got caught in the dirt and it stretched my leg too far back.

    It was maybe 2 or so years ago, six months ago I got an x-ray and an MRI because it was giving me trouble.

    The Doc said he could not see anything wrong, but scince I do have a little trouble with it he advised I stretch properly before doing anything major.

    I believe it was my Hip Flexor, and after it healed it left some scar tissue, the Doc said to deal with it.

    Scince then apart from my Hip Flexor feeling a little soar after strenuous activies it has been fine, but now the back part of the same hip is giving me pain with some stretches and kicks.

    Do you guys this would be totally unrelated to the previous injury or is my left hip just going down the shitter?

    It may not help, but it's good to take cod liver oil for many reasons.

    i used to have the same problem. it's not a flexibility problem, you are letting your leg swing. always go for power and you'll get used to it. if this happens mostly with shadowboxing or missing your opponent, then you need to pivot your body to follow your kick. try to not pivot too much to expose your body. this is how my joints work too. eventually i started pivoting less and less and i'm fine now! it takes time.

    Frequent hip pain sucks!
    Like many have said - get it checked. The hips will affected almost any activity you attempt. Also, hip surgery is not nearly as routine as many others like knee surgery, since it is a deep tight joint.

    I am now 35 and had a condition as a child (Legg-Calves Perthes) that required re-shaping of the ball at the end of my femurs and metal plates for about 12 months when I was 12. I've been having increasing trouble kicking and 2 professionals have recently told my that my good hip is equivalent to a 50 year-old, while my bad hip is like a 70 year-old and that I will probably need a hip replacement by 50.

    In the meantime I have been stretching alot more and am checking-out the threads indicated above.
