On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Jackob Johnson of the Black Fist Self-Defense Project.
With the recent rise in hate crimes and openly racist and white supremacist attacks in the U.S. since the Electoral College victory of Trump, the need for self-defense of the many groups and people targeted by these perpetrators of reaction has become urgent. The Black Fist Self-Defense Project is one of these new groups trying to fulfill this need.
To discuss this, we spoke with Jackob Johnson by phone Friday.
"Basically the project itself is about self-defense," he said.
"We all understand that since the election of Donald Trump there have been a lot of, I'll say, hate crimes against minorities. And so we thought that it's a good idea where as Black people we could be able to defend ourselves.
"The main idea is not even the defense. It's just being able to be in a position to defend ourselves. And also we understand that self-defense is something that if you know, it boosts your own self, I would say, esteem."
To accomplish this, this year they have begun holding a series of seminars and self-defense classes around the U.S. At this time these classes have been held in New York and Florida, with more locations soon to be announced. The trainers include Omowale Adewale, a kickboxer, boxer, and MMA fighter based in New York.
We also discussed how many of their students are beginners, combining self-defense training with a series of talks with people in the community, the need for "Black people to come together" and to be both "physically and mentally strong", their use of social media and the Meetup web site, and much more.
In addition, we open with a commentary on the importance of using the combat sports to fight the rise of reaction we see today, and of following the time-tested slogan on "an injury to one is an injury to all".
