Like I get WHY the US seems to avoid former generals/admirals for leaders given the way the biggest despots seem to come from those ranks in other countries but maybe once every 50 years wouldn't be so bad.

Yeah, it depends on the character of the person, and I am consistently impressed by Mattis. Powell, if he wanted to, probably could have beaten Gore as a Republican in 2000, or beaten McCain as a Democrat in 2008.

2 whole events. Yeah, they suck and it sucks to see civilians caught in the middle but that's a fact of war. The days of WWI where there's a battlefield that doesn't impact civilians has been over for a long time.

Of a war that Mattis was involved in from the start until his retirement in 2013 as an active duty Marine... if the only things that can get pointed to are two events from essentially the beginning of that war? Eisenhower, as someone I think @Rod1 mentioned dropped bombs on fucking blocks that had churches and shit in them during WWII. The American shelling of Normandy leveled some towns to the point the tallest thing standing was the old stone wall that was like waist high.

From friends that fought in Fallujah, Fallujah essentially got leveled because the people of Fallujah were hiding the para-military insurgents. Marines and Army were essentially forced to go house to house building to building clearing people out.
