Just moved to nyc. Lower West Harlem. Looking at gyms. Purple belt who's a few years behind training after a lot of travel. (And yeah, I know Marcelo's & Renzo's are awesome, but trying to give an honest shake to all the local gyms.)

Saw this: http://www.uwskenshikai.com/bjj/
Really close, but no instructor info and connected to some sort of ASL / animal palm lookin' karate ( http://www.uwskenshikai.com/images/shuseki-01.jpg ).

Legit or not?

Off-topic: Shaolin charges for trial classes, but gives you a gi? Feels weird to pay for trial classes, but worth?

Don't know but what I noticed on the site:

- bragging about "small classes" is not a good selling point for BJJ.. you'll want as many different partners possible. there you might be only purple belt... that's ok if you want to start teaching and later take over the school and make it full blown bjj school but if you want to challenge yourself and grow... pass!
- the bjj classes are one hour long... that is not enough

That gym might be good for Willoughby, Ohio but there is already a better BJJ school in Willoughby, Ohio so if you moved to the mecca of east coast bjj ... Marcelo's, Renzo's, Unity (Murilo Santana), Shaolin, Fabio Clemente, more Renzo's... why would you even bother?

They say they have a brow belt under Gene Dunn on the site.

You can always go and visit to check it out. You are a purple belt and you know what to look for.

You may want to check out some of the schools listed already or one of Jucao's locations also. There are a lot of options for you is the good news.

I would not pay for a trial class. That is just a money grab in my opinion. If you are worried people visiting would try to get a free trial class you can just verify they live in the area the way Marcelo's does.

I train at a Team Jucao affiliate. He's a great teacher and super nice guy.

Forgot to thank everyone for the posts.

Running the nyc grappling circuit has been great so far. Still have a couple key gyms to try (my body needed some recovery time after so long off training :).

Will drop by UWSJJ later and let people know how it is.

Going to bring this one up from the dead. Neurojitsu, what did you end up doing?

I just moved to the same area, and trying to figure out what to do. Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers!

Good point. I guess that was that, I'll have to NeuroJitsu the scene myself haha
