Compelling and rich that they fancy themselves more generous when the US gives far more than all of them to pretty much every cause. Are these the same people who made the list of "worst places to live", putting Ethiopia in the top 10 best and US in the bottom half?

They are also not nearly the most free. The only area they probably do have the lead from that list is corruption, but they've given enough authority to the gov't where their first corrupt leader will be their last leader.

Can we maybe try to include a few other factors besides nationality when deciding the level of happiness for a country of nearly 350 million, like age, marital status, income, education? There is literally a movie called "happy people" about people with next to nothing living in Siberia, so happiness =/= actually having it better. Americans are spoiled, that's no surprise.

1. The Scandinavian countries seem like very nice places. I hope to get the chance to visit some day. I've always been fascinated by medieval North Atlantic literature like the Icelandic sagas.

They seem to have perfected a workable hybrid of socialism and capitalism based on common cultural expectations. That obviously seems under stress now with the attempt at becoming more ethnically and culturally diverse via North African and Middle Eastern immigration.

In a way, these countries are sort of a political Rorschach test. The right refuses to acknowledge how successful some of their leftist policies have been while the left refuses to acknowledge how problematic mass Islamic migration has been.

2. As far as happiness goes, I think outside of basic human needs, my happiness is not very dependent on politics. My family, church, and friends are a much greater source of happiness to me than tax rates or social safety net, etc.

I was reading something recently which said that mental health was a better indicator of happiness than wealth.

Makes sense.

I know SFA but I would presume all the top countries listed have better mental health care than the USA. My thinking being if you have heavy mental issues you probably don't have the funds to get them sorted without universal health care.
