There is a "Chinese Kenzo Karate" gym and another karate gym that moonlights as a Muay Thai gym but super expensive and has no one who actually competes in Muay Thai at the gym(and the Kru makes you wear a Karate Ki before each Muay Thai sessions before taking the Ki off and your Muay Thai gear underneath it).

The city is a decent size, 120k people but totally devoid of any credible Muay Thai gym, is it possible there are individual teachers who don't have gyms? Has anyone learned this way from an individual or is that a bad idea? How different is "Chinese Kenzo Karate" because a friend said that is the closest to Muay Thai I will get in the area. What to do? I am super interested in Muay Thai and Muay Thai only. Advice?

I would either:
1. Go to a boxing gym
2. Look for muay thai gym in a nearby city
3. Go train in thailand

I wouldn't go to either of those gyms you described personally.

I agree with Kanka, find a Boxing gym in your area the training will be more legit and despite the lack of kicks probably closer to real Muay Thai training than Chinese Karate (lol WTF?)

I'd also recommend getting into a tanning salon ASAP and start studying Laurence Kenshin videos.

Tanning salon? What? haha
It's been pretty well established that darker complexion = greater Muay Thai skill, so I'd recommend at least getting a base started right away before entering a gym.

Are you sure it's not "Chinese Kenpo" or "Kenpo Karate" instead?
I've never heard of "Chinese Kenzo Karate", and nor has google it seems...

What's the city if I may ask? We could help you find a decent alternative or even a decent Muay Thai gym not too far away.

You forgot to tell him he also needs to lose tons of weight until he's between 55 and 65 kilos, whatever his height. The tan comes first though. Oh and dying his hair black and straightening it should be part of this awesome preparation too.

I am in Las Cruces New Mexico. No car currently so a drive to El Paso(The closest major city) is out of the question. Also, I am pretty tan and skinny as it is, so I am halfway to becoming a world champion Muay Thai fighter....right?;)

Edit- The gym I went and looked at was Guzman Kickboxing, but it was mainly karate for little kids and that was the gym that made you wear a karate gi before each Muay Thai session, he wants $89 a month for 12 months Mon-Fri 1 hour of Muay Thai a day it says on schedule.

do they have any pro muay thai fighters? if they don't, stay away from it and go to a boxing gym instead

It looks very fishy, big red flags IMO

The instructor calls himself Master Sensei and is apparently a 7th degree black belt in "Karate" but nowhere it says what style of Karate he teaches or holds his black belt in. Some of his other titles are ridiculous and have no source, date or anything. He's also a Level 5 Black Belt in Muay Thai! What? lol

His Karate classes are 45 minutes long. Really? That's just enough time for warm-up at beginning + stretch/cool-down at the end in my country lol
The Muay Thai classes are also either 1 hour or 45 minutes.

And then also the crazy prices, and no notable students or fighters profiles.
I'd stay away from there like the plague if I were you...

I've had a look for you, and it seems you live in mcdojo city. No sign of a good Muay Thai or Karate dojo either.

The only options I found are:
http://americaninstituteofkenpo.com/AIK/Home.html

http://www.zianet.com/ckk/

http://www.maxmartialartscenter.com/

https://www.facebook.com/BlueDragonDojo/

http://www.akkakarateusa.net/history

But there's nothing that looks too promising. The first 3 in that list are maybe OK...
You'll just have to visit them all and ask for a free session and see what you think. I kinda feel sorry for you...

This is the unfortunate reality in many areas of the country. It can litterally be impossible to find legit training in most spots, or you are required to drive way to far to get it.

I know you guys give me shit for supporting guys from CSA because they aren't world beaters but given what's available you gotta credit gyms that are at least trying to get on that level. Baby steps.

I guess you don't realise how bad it is until you live in the country or actually google search training places like I just did. Now I understand why so many Americans have such a low view on traditional martial arts, a lot of those places are just money making jokes...

I really do feel privileged living in London UK where you can find very high level instruction and fighters all around the city for pretty much any martial art or fight sport.

Haha yea I am in a shitty position gym wise right now ha thanks for the help guys.

Yeah man I wanted to get in to kyokushin when I was younger, but no luck.
If it were me ts, I would probably try the 3rd one on that list, looks like they are part of some tournament circuit with a light contact rule set. Better than nothing.

I would go to some of those Chinese Karate places and ask if you can sit in and watch some classes. You might just find one that is combat sport oriented.

Can someone clarify for me, on this site http://www.zianet.com/ckk/classes.html, it says
"Classes
Chinese Kenpo Karate of New Mexico and Monsivaiz Kickboxing

Offering Amateur and Professional Karate • Kickboxing • Boxing
Muay Thai International Rules• Group Karate classes for Children 6 years and up

• Private and group lessons available for men and women

• Monsivaiz kickboxing and boxing classes for beginning and advanced fighters, Monday – Thursday 7 to 8 p.m."

So the Muay Thai international rules, would that mean that they teach Muay Thai then? Or is that something totally different? I do not have many options in my area so any help is appreciated.
