The 1080ti I got about a month ago has shot up to $1,400 on Newegg. I got it for $800. Bananas.

Mining is how people acquire the crypto currencies like bitcoin and etherium.
To get those currencies, you solve complex algorithms with your computer. video cards work really well crunching those numbers so that's why they're sold out everywhere.
That's a very, very simplified version and I'm leaving stuff out but it should give you a basic idea of what's going on.

1080ti's aren't really profitable for mining due to their power consumption. You're more than likely seeing the card is no longer being made or they've slowed down production.
I'm guessing it's the second one because mid tier cards are being sold out so quickly and at a larger profit margin, companies are trying to make as many as possible.
1080's and higher haven't really been affected price wise because the reason above. The only other cards not affected are the gtx1050ti and lower because they don't put out a good hash rate to mine with.

@Madmick I can see that monitor being useful for email notifications, alarm clock/timer notifications, door bell integration so you know when the pizza guy arrived, etc.
I definitely wouldn't pay extra money for it, but I wouldn't complain if a monitor had it.

Ok. i get it. They are making money some how. Who? Normal or shady people?

    1. As a person who is not in to the mining world. How does it affect me? Every time my PC is online (and that is all the time). Are there people who can notice what config I have, and use my equipment to solve said algorithms? Do I have to click on shady links (I never do) to get this infection or can they hack "clean" computers like in the spy-movies?

    2. The above poster I replied to said "damn miners". I have heard this quite many times. What do they mean? Are the miners affecting the pricing for the higher-end GPU´s? Or am I totally out in the blue?

The only way it will affect you is if you want a new graphics card.
There have been some websites that will use your computer to mine when you have their website open, but it's usually shady stuff like The Pirate Bay or porn. Once you close the tab, it won't mine anymore. The way I look at it, they're just trying to get a different revenue source since everyone uses ad blockers now. I don't agree with it, but I understand it. It's called Coin Hive if you want to dig into it a little more.
I'm sure there's malware that will use your compute to mine as well, but that can be prevented by using security software such as Malwarebytes.

Here's a video on how to mine yourself with off the shelf hardware.

Miners are buying every video card they can get their hands on and filling warehouses with them.
Here's a mine in Iceland with over 10k video cards

It would be to replace a 3rd monitor. It won't be used for gaming, I just want real estate.
My center screen is a 1440 144hz free sync TN. I haven't noticed any tearing at all. Panel to the left is the panel I listed above. I'd like to replace my panel to the right which is a 720p 21" mounted vertically.
I picked up the panel I listed for $120 on Black Friday and I've been kicking myself since for not picking up another.

    Cheers! Much appretiated.

That picture looks shady, and I kind of getting a vibe of weed plantage. This mining and bitcoin is a new world for me. It reminds me of old school RTS ala Age of Empires and micro management. For me totally waste of time compare to what I get out if it. Pure waste of time. I mean... The electric bill!! Come on...

But I guess the guy who built this setup, probably have his own private geyser generating power.

We live in a insane world.

Literally every one of those functions can be performed by a computer and tailored to notify the user via the monitor itself however you choose.

It's stupid. RGB is pure vanity. There's no need to pretend it's more than that.

I'm not going to use the side panels for gaming, so there's really no sense in spending the extra money on 1440p panels.

Eh, I see use cases for it. Are they solid? No, it would be more for someone that likes to tinker/program.
