If I recall correctly the United States helped overthrow democratically elected leader in Iran and replaced him with a dictator, right?

I don't recall much of Afghanistan's history. It's been awhile since I've read up on it and I didn't go very in depth with my research.
I believe you're right, but it's been some time since I read up on the particulars. Without a doubt American policies of the time helped royally fuck the middle east into the quaint place it is today. But I've benefited as an American by the decisions the couple of generations before me have made so I'm not gonna tear'em down.

Just looked it up. It was a joint effort with Britain (the CIA was involved). The cause of the overthrow? Oil, mainly. The British government apparently still won't acknowledge their involvement.
