Most Overrated "Great" Movies

that newer Batman movie with the Joker in it. that movie sucked dog shit

This is very true, its why I think Gangs of New York is also a disjointed film like The Departed is. Gangs of New York was only good because of Daniel Day-Lewis, and The Departed was just a horrible film, very boring and just nothing there, almost barren. I saw Infernal Affairs years before and had no idea that The Departed was based on it, still scratching my head on that one...

Gangs of Newyork is I think the perfect example of his strengths and weaknesses, pretty much everyone seems to be in agreement that they'd far rather have seen a film based on Bill the Butcher, maybe still have the Irish plot but with Neesons character leading it showing some interest and flaws himself rather than Leo's boring whitebread hero and his revenge plot.

Its not down to Leo either, when Marty went back to character studies with him on the Aviator or the Wolf of Wall street he was fine.

I'm tempted to ban you.

I'll hear rebuttals on the latter two. But nothing could possibly polish the (coincidentally over-polished) turd that is The Departed.

I dont like threads like this.

Just pure hater shit

No humor or anything good can come from it. Just arguments and insults.

Fight Club is a great, albeit flawed, film.

As far as The Departed, I don't understand the claim it was all-round shitty. Nicholson was a caricature; but that's who the character was. Damon's character seemed flat, because his character was essentially a spy playing chess with his own life. The dialogue is good, the action scenes are good. They pour it on a little thick with the New England stereotypes, but so does every single other film ever made, set in Boston.

One Hour Photo is really a very underrated film. Rarely see it mentioned.
Moon isn't underrated imo, it's a great film and many love it.

Avatar. Nice visuals, predictable and overdone story.

Wow, I can’t believe The Godfather, Goodfellas, the Departed are on people’s lists.....

I do t like movies that are so dark all of the fun is gone.

TDKR
District 9
Captain America

I wouldn't say i hate Nolan, I just feel his movies for a lack of a better word having an incredibly bland /sterile feel to them. They cant even evoke a strong emotion either way about them be it negative or positive.
Exactly right.

this thread reminded me of the first 30 seconds of the above.

how many here are shitting on quality movies, while at the same time, have emerged from a movie theatre, and thought ''Wow that was fuckin awesome'' and the ''fuckin awesome'' was some lame Avengers or other juvenile superhero horseshit ?

if so, delete your post, because your opinion doesn't matter.

I feel like Moon and Crazy Heart, both outstanding movies made in 2009, never get brought up. I like the latter much more than the former, but both are really great.

Robin Williams' performance in One Hour Photo always stuck with me. And the director did such a good job of sort of sterilizing the film around his performance.

Fight Club is a great, albeit flawed, film.

Ironically its probably most overrated by people who don't really understood its message taking it more as a cool anti establishment film.

As far as Nolan goes its really more than outside The Dark Knight and maybe Memento I don't have his films down as absolute classics, just generally very good. I'd agree there's a certain sterility to his work, perhaps because he tends to talk down to the audience quite a lot with excessive exposition? You could argue I spose that's the price you need to pay for making massive blockbusters.
