FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR is Ready to Soar Again with LUCIFER Showrunner
Flight of the Navigator is ready to soar once again. Joe Henderson, the showrunner of Fox’s supernatural show Lucifer, has been hired to write a reboot of the 1986 kids sci-fi adventure movie that is now set up at Lionsgate. The Henson Co. is on board to produce.
The movie told of a 12-year-old boy who is abducted by a UFO and reappears eight years later, at the exact same age and with no memories of what happened. When NASA officials spot a connection between the boy and a recovered UFO and try to ensnare him, the kid tries to unravel the intergalactic mystery while trying to reunite with his family.
Randal Kleiser, best known for directing Grease, helmed the movie, which was released by Disney but made by early 1980s outfit Producers Sales Organization (the company was also behind The Outsiders and The NeverEnding Story).
Disney tried reimaging the title in 2009 — at one point, Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly worked on the script — but that version didn't achieve liftoff.
Henderson also served as a writer and co-executive producer on White Collar, Graceland and Almost Human. He has an overall deal with Warner Bros. and sold a spec script titled In the Land of Imagined Things to Disney.
