Robert Vaughn, the urbane actor who starred as the American spy Napoleon Solo on the slick 1960s NBC series The Man From U.N.C.L.E., died Friday. He was 83.

Vaughn, who received an Oscar nomination for playing Paul Newman’s hard-drinking buddy Chet in the 1959 drama The Young Philadelphians, died of acute leukemia in a hospital on the East Coast, his manager Matthew Sullivan told The Hollywood Reporter. He had been undergoing treatment for his illness in New York and Connecticut.

Vaughn's memorable performances also included turns as one of the seven gunmen in The Magnificent Seven (1960), as a steely senator in Bullitt (1968) — those two opposite Steve McQueen — as an addled studio chief in Blake Edwards’ S.O.B. (1981) and as a corporate villain in Superman III(1983).

DreamWorks Animation Not Moving Forward with THE CROODS 2

The-Croods-Family-220-Dragonlord.jpg

DreamWorks Animation and its new parent, Universal Studios, have pulled the plug on the long-gestating sequel to the 2013 hit The Croods.

Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley met with workers at DreamWorks Animation’s Glendale headquarters Thursday to confirm that production of The Croods 2 was being stopped immediately.

Some 30 employees who have been working on the film, launched 3 1/2 years ago, will be looking for new jobs. The workers were told DreamWorks Animation hopes to keep them at the company. Some could be shifted to other film projects, while others might be put into training or “artistic development” programs, according to an individual at Universal, who asked not to be named.

The initial Croods film charmed audiences with the tale of a family that deals with problems small (gathering food) and large (the impending destruction of the world.) It made $587 million worldwide at the box office, on a production budget of $135 million.

When Comcast bought DreamWorks Animation in April of this year, it put the hierarchy at Universal Studios in charge of the toon studio founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg. Individuals at both DreamWorks and Universal said doubts had been raised about proceeding with Croods 2 even before Universal was put in charge. Two sources said that Universal was effectively just ratifying a decision already made by DreamWorks Animation to kill the movie.

Trouble was already evident in August, when the companies announced that an expected 2017 release would be pushed back into 2018.

HARLEY QUINN and BUMBLEBEE Spinoff MovieS Get a Screenwriter

Suicide-Squad-Harley-Quinn-051616-Dragonlord.jpg

Screenwriter Christina Hodson is scripting the Harley Quinn/Birds of Prey spinoff for Warner Bros. and DC Films, TheWrap has learned exclusively.

The film is not a Quinn solo movie, but rather would feature multiple female superheroes — and possibly villains — in the DC Comics universe.

Margot Robbie, last seen as the Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, is attached to reprise her role as Quinn and is also producing the untitled project.

Hodson is a hot commodity, as the screenwriter has made the Black List with scripts three different times since turning to writing four years ago. One of those, her spec script The Eden Project, sold in a splashy deal to Sony and Material Pictures. Hodson has also written a reboot of The Fugitive for Warner Bros and producer Arnold Kopelson.

Hodson also wrote Bumblebee, the first spinoff of Paramount’s billion-dollar Transformers franchise, based on the popular Autobot in the series. The studio will shortly go out to directors.
