Johnny Depp to Star in FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM Sequel

Johnny-Depp-Fantastic-Beasts-Sequel-Dragonlord.jpg

Johnny Depp is joining the cast of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, playing a co-starring role in the sequel which David Yates will direct early next year with Eddie Redmayne again in the lead role of Newt Scamander.

Deadline has confirmed this, but no one is saying exactly what role that Depp will play. But the site believes that if you look carefully, you might spot him in a tiny turn in the first installment of the J.K. Rowling-created Harry Potter spinoff, which Warner Bros opens November 18.

We’ll just have to wait and see how Depp complements the adventures of writer Newt Scamander in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards, 70 years before Harry Potter reads his book in school.

Depp films the sequel and becomes part of the universe after he completes another ensemble, the Kenneth Branagh-directed Fox whodunit Murder On The Orient Express. This would come before Depp takes roles in Labryinth, the drama about the murders of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls, and before he stars as The Invisible Man.

Fede Alvarez in Talks to Direct THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Sequel

Fede-Alvarez-Girl-in-the-Spiders-Web-Dragonlord.jpg

As it goes about relaunching its The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo franchise, Sony Pictures is looking at Uruguay-born Fede Alverez to direct a new installment, The Girl in the Spider Web, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Alverez enjoyed a hit this summer when his horror pic Don’t Breathe, from Sony’s Screen Gems unit, scared up $151.4 million worldwide.

Sony ‘s The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo, released in 2011, was based on the first of the three detective novels about journalist Mikael Blomkvist and computer hacker Lisbeth Salander written by Stieg Larsson, who died in 2004.

The new project would be based on the fourth book in the series, which was written by David Lagercrantz and released in 2015 and quickly acquired by Sony. Stephen Knight is adapting the novel for the screen.

THE DARK TOWER Release Pushed Back to Summer 2017

Dark-Tower-Set-Idris-Elba-092116-Dragonlord.jpg

The gunslinger’s journey to The Dark Tower has hit a detour. A film version of Stephen King’s apocalyptic saga was originally set for release on Feb. 17, but now will shift to the summer of 2017, sources close to the film tell EW.

The movie stars Idris Elba as Roland the Gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey as a sorcerer known as the Man in Black, both of whom are on a quest to reach the mystical tower that stands at the nexus of countless dimensions.

Principal photography for the Nikolaj Arcel-directed film wrapped on schedule in late July, but the plan to have a completed film ready to screen six months later proved to be overly ambitious. Now, Sony Pictures and production company MRC have decided post-production can’t be finished in that timeframe and are about to inform theater owners of the change.

Sources close to the movie tell EW it’s a matter of needing deadline extensions on the visual effects, as well as more lead-up to promote the film.

A trailer leak last month featured mostly rough visual effects, and the filmmakers have discovered that the aggressive February timeline isn’t enough time to get the sci-fi/fantasy epic into shape, given its financial constraints. The film has a surprisingly low cost of about $60 million, and the choice was either to add millions more to the budget to speed up the work, or push to a later date.

“It’s a very fiscally responsible budget, and trying to stay in budget to make money and stay profitable means the VFX won’t be finished in time [for February],” one source tells EW, on condition of anonymity. “Now that there’s more time, they’re not paying rush charges to get the effects where they need to be.”

This also will allow more time to publicize the movie, which hopes to become a multi-film franchise, with a spin-off TV show already in the works.

Only four months from release, there’s still no trailer. And the film recently dropped out of EW’s PopFest a week before the fan gathering, with the studio indicating the footage set to be previewed wasn’t ready. Ever since, fans have been speculating that the movie might be wavering on its February target.

A new release date wasn’t available, the sources said, because a new weekend hasn’t been selected yet. A formal announcement is expected as soon as that’s settled.

New Theatrical Trailer for WONDER WOMAN Released

Wonder-Woman-Gal-Gadot-110316-Dragonlord.jpg

Warner Bros. has released a new Wonder Woman trailer, one that promises a (relatively) colorful and exciting action-adventure film set against the horrors of World War I. The upcoming DC superhero film stars Gal Gadot as the eponymous Amazon who teams up with pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) to go fight in The Great War.

This looks to be a thrilling origin story and will undoubtedly be the biggest superhero film ever to feature a female lead. Director Patty Jenkins appears to have put together a superhero film that can do the character justice while also threading the heroine’s story into the DC Extended Universe. Be excited!

The film opens June 2, 2017, and also stars Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Lucy Davis, and Danny Huston.

Rob Liefeld's AVENGELYNE Lands at Paramount with Akiva Goldsman Producing

Paramount-Avengelyne-Dragonlord.jpg

Paramount has made a preemptive film rights deal for Avengelyne, with Akiva Goldsman producing with an eye toward directing a thriller revolving around a heroine hatched by Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld.

Goldsman, who is currently overseeing the Hasbro movies for Paramount after overseeing the Transformers writer room for the studio, will head the search for a screenwriter to draft a movie that is being called John Wick with a fallen angel. Deal was mid against high six figures for the rights.

Avengelyne is an angel who fights the forces of evil and often finds herself face-to-face with demons and monsters. Avengelyne uses her powers to fight demons on earth and is being groomed to be humankind’s last hope in a coming Armageddon.

Liefeld several years ago said he would write the movie as a vehicle for fighter-turned-action star Gina Carano. There is no actress in line for the role at the moment.

Goldsman originated the script for The Dark Tower and is producing the Nikolaj Arcel-directed adaptation of the Stephen King novels. He is also a producer on the Guy Ritchie-directed King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

Olivia Munn Joins Boyd Holbrook in THE PREDATOR; Set in Suburbia

Olivia-Munn-The-Predator-Dragonlord.jpg

Olivia Munn is in negotiations to join Boyd Holbrook in The Predator, Twentieth Century Fox's reboot of the alien action-movie series that Shane Black is directing.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but this much is known: The story plunks the alien hunter — whom audiences have seen fight in jungles, concrete jungles, frozen wastelands and alien planets — in the harsh environment of … suburbia.

Holbrook is starring in the movie, which was co-written by Black and Fred Dekker. Munn will play a scientist opposite Holbrook’s Special Forces commando.

Munn is coming off a role in Fox's summer X-Men franchise outing, X-Men: Apocalypse, in which she played the mutant Psylocke. She will next be seen in DreamWorks' ensemble comedy Office Christmas Party.

STARSHIP TROOPERS Reboot in the Works with BAYWATCH Screenwriters

Starship-Troopers-053114-Dragonlord.jpg

The bugs are coming back. Columbia Pictures is rebooting Starship Troopers, the 1997 sci-fi film directed by Paul Verhoeven.

The studio has tapped Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, the writing duo behind the upcoming Baywatch movie, to pen the script for a new theatrical feature film that would relaunch a potential franchise.

Neal H. Moritz, the producer behind the Fast & Furious franchise, is producing with Toby Jaffe, with whom he worked on the studio's remake of another 1990s sci-fi pic, Total Recall.

Starship Troopers is based on the sci-fi war novel by Robert A. Heinlein that told the military life of a soldier named Johnny Rico who moves up the ranks as mankind fights a war against alien bugs.

Verhoeven took some of the novel's themes and ran with them, making a movie that satirically took on fascism and militarism and echoed propaganda films like Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will. It starred Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards and Neil Patrick Harris.

Starship Troopers was a mixed success at the time of its release but did achieve a cult following. During the DVD boom of the 2000s, it became a mini-franchise for the studio, which produced three direct-to-DVD movies.

The studio is not remaking the film but is said to be going back to the original Heinlein novel for an all-new take. No personnel from the 1997 film are involved.

Ciaran Hinds Cast as JUSTICE LEAGUE Villain Steppenwolf

E5PBxsu.jpg

It looks like the Justice League found it’s bad guy as Game of Thrones star Ciaran Hinds will play Steppenwolf in DC Films’ upcoming ensemble superhero movie which recently wrapped production, TheWrap has exclusively learned.

Hinds recently wrapped production on the role of Steppenwolf which is a motion capture character from an alien planet, much like the Marvel Studios villain Thanos played by Josh Brolin in Avengers: Infinity War.

Insiders also said that Steppenwolf’s look will be upgraded from his first appearance in the DC Films universe in a deleted scene from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

In that clip released the Monday after the film’s opening weekend, Lex Luthor (Jesse Esienberg) communicates with Steppenwolf via the technology on the Kryptonian ship.

When the SWAT team arrived to arrest Luthor, Steppenwolf screeched and cut off contact. The clip never revealed who this alien was, but one of the strongest theories was that it was Steppenwolf, going off its physical appearances and the three mother boxes.

The three mother boxes are the macguffins Steppenwolf is after in Justice League.

“[Back] before there was a history … mankind, the Atlanteans — before they were under water — the Amazonians and, actually, the old gods, teamed together and decided that — based on an event that happened — these mother boxes were going to be placed in the care of, as I say, the Amazonians, mankind and the Atlanteans,” producer Charles Roven revealed. “So that allows us to get into some of those environments.”

In the rebooted continuity of the New 52, Steppenwolf is seen in the Earth 2 timeline as a lieutenant of Darkseid who leads the flying Parademon forces of Apokolips against Earth, killing Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman in the process and paving the way for a new generation of superheroes.

Universal Developing VOLTRON Live-Action Movie with David Hayter Scripting

Universal-Voltron-Movie-Dragonlord.jpg

While Universal Pictures is sorting through the development and production projects it received in the DreamWorks Animation deal, it also inherited a live-action picture that had started quietly being developed when Jeffrey Katzenberg ran the animation factory.

Universal now has a live-action Voltron film that is being scripted by David Hayter, the X-Men and Watchmen scribe who is also dialed into the fanboy set as the voice of Solid Snake in the English versions of the Metal Gear Solid franchise.

Deadline has confirmed Hayter is writing the live-action project that started at DWA, which is also generating the animated series Voltron: Legendary Defender for Netflix. The property is about a corps of astronauts that pilot a giant super robot.

Rami Malek to Play Freddie Mercury in Bryan Singer's BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

Rami-Malek-Freddie-Mercury-Dragonlord.jpg

Coming off of an Emmy win for his work on USA’s cult hit show Mr. Robot, Rami Malek will portray rock star Freddie Mercury in the long-in-the-works biopic of the band Queen that will be directed by X-Men director Bryan Singer.

Fox and New Regency are behind the project, titled Bohemian Rhapsody, which will be produced by Graham King. Anthony McCarten, Oscar-nominated for The Theory of Everything, wrote the most recent draft.

The boarding of Malek and Singer kickstarts a project that had petered out since Sacha Baron Cohen walked away from it after spending years attached to play Mercury.

The flamboyant frontman was born in what is now Tanzania and grew up in India before moving to England in the mid-1960s. He teamed up with Brian May and Roger Taylor in 1970 to form Queen, a seminal rock band with hits such as "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Are the Champions," and "Somebody to Love" (and who can forget their soundtrack work for Flash Gordon and Highlander?). Mercury, generally acknowledged to have one of the great voices in rock, died in 1991 from complications due to AIDS. He was 45.

THE PREDATOR Will Reportedly Not Take Place in Suburbia

Interest in the new Predator movie has been high for some time now, especially with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3, and The Nice Guys writer/director Shane Black at the helm. And with production gearing up to begin in February in Vancouver, more details are starting to trickle out.

We know that Boyd Holbrook (Narcos) is poised to star in the film, and last week we learned that Olivia Munn (Magic Mike, The Newsroom) is now in talks to join the ensemble. Included in THR’s report on Munn’s casting was the claim that The Predator will take place in the suburbs.

However, sources close to the film’s production tell Collider that is not the case—The Predator is not a movie about the suburbs.

There was reason to believe THR’s report given Black’s knack for subverting expectations, but Collider is told they (or their sources) were mistaken. Details for the film are being kept firmly under wraps, but when the movie hits theaters on February 9, 2018, don’t expect any suburban “The Predator lurking in rich, fancy swimming pools” scenes.

So what do we know about the film? Well, Black—who had a minor role in the original Predator—has since revealed that this new movie is a sequel, not a reboot, and we know it’ll be an R-rated film.

Toby Jones and Prometheus actor Rafe Spall are in talks to join Universal and Amblin Entertainment’s next chapter in the Jurassic World franchise.

J.A. Bayona is on board to direct. Colin Trevorrow, who helmed Jurassic World, penned the script with his writing partner Derek Connolly. Trevorrow will also exec produce with Steven Spielberg.

Max Landis to Write and Direct AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON Remake

Max-Landis-American-Werewolf-in-London-Dragonlord.jpg

Another Landis is getting set to howl at the moon. Max Landis will write and direct a remake of An American Werewolf in London, following in the footsteps of his father John Landis, who directed the 1981 cult classic.

The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and cohort David Albert, who executive produce the hit AMC television show, will produce the American Werewolf remake, which is set up at Universal.

The original movie told the story of two Americans backpacking in the English countryside who are attacked by a creature. Weeks later, the lone survivor begins to see apparitions of his dead friend, who warns him that he is turning into a werewolf. Bloody mayhem ensues.

The movie was influential in 1980s horror and was groundbreaking in the visual arena: It won the first-ever Oscar for outstanding makeup and catapulted the career of creature creator Rick Baker.

Max Landis wrote the geek-friendly movies Chronicle and American Ultra and is the screenwriter behind BBC America's television adaptation of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. He also wrote Bright, the buddy-cop fantasy starring Will Smith that David Ayers is directing for Netflix.
