Leonardo DiCaprio to Produce and Star in Leonardo da Vinci Movie for Paramount

lXgeNPg.jpg

Paramount has beaten out Universal in a seven-figure bidding war for the rights to Walter Isaacson’s book on Leonardo da Vinci, Variety can confirm. The biopic will star fellow Leo, Leonardo DiCaprio.

DiCaprio will also produce the film under his Appian Way banner alongside president of production Jennifer Davisson.

ICM Partners brokered the deal for Isaacson and his book, “Leonardo da Vinci,” in advance of its release. Universal attempted to outbid Paramount on Friday with bidding continuing into Saturday morning.

DiCaprio’s desire to portray da Vinci on film is no coincidence. The actor’s mother famously claims to have chosen the artist as her son’s namesake when she felt an in utero DiCaprio kick for the first time while examining a da Vinci piece at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy back in 1974.

Isaacson is a New York Times Best Selling author who has written biographies on other notable thinkers such as Albert Einstein, Henry Kissinger, Steve Jobs, and Benjamin Franklin. Most recently, his 2007 book “Einstein: His Life and Universe” was adapted into National Geographic’s Genius, starring Geoffrey Rush as Einstein.

Breaking: Tom Cruise Injured While Performing Stunt on MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 6 Set

tom-cruise-stunt-accident-0814.gif

Tom Cruise may have suffered an injury while performing a stunt for Mission: Impossible 6.

Video taken on the London set obtained by TMZ shows the actor jumping from one building to another and falling short of his mark. Cruise appears to have hit the building hard and is shown limping away after getting back on his feet.

He was able to return to the line and get himself back to the original building.

Tom Cruise Apparently Injured in 'Mission: Impossible 6' Stunt

I give Cruise all the props in the world for wanting to do all of his own stunts but he's in his 50s now and should start pulling back on the stunts a little bit and eventually get out of the action movie game. Should do more dramas like he used to do prior to the mid late 90s when he started to do action movies primarily. He's got some good acting skills and doesn't necessarily have to risk his life anymore.

Anya Taylor-Joy Reteams with THE WITCH Director for NOSFERATU Remake

fLttCcB.jpg

After breaking out in his psychological thriller The Witch, Anya Taylor-Joy is looking to reteam with director Robert Eggers on his new take on a cinematic classic.

Sources tell Variety that the Split actress is in negotiations to star in Studio 8’s remake of Nosferatu.

Eggers is writing and directing the pic. The 1922 silent movie followed the vampire Count Orlok of Transylvania, who wants to buy a house in Germany and becomes enamored of the real-estate agent’s wife. It was an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and Werner Herzog directed a 1979 remake.

Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus will produce.

Eggers has already signed a deal with Studio 8 and is attached to direct The Knight for the studio. Jon Silk brought the Nosferatu project to Studio 8.

Eggers wanted to reteam with Taylor-Joy on the film early in the process, but after she became a bona fide movie star in M. Night Shyamalan’s hit Split, the young actress’ schedule has filled up. She is currently filming Josh Boone’s X-Men film New Mutants and is also signed on for the Split and Unbreakable sequel Glass, which also stars James McAvoy, Bruce Willis, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Stuntwoman Killed in a Motorcycle Crash on the Set of DEADPOOL 2

1BqLNLu.jpg

A rookie stuntwoman who was killed in a motorcycle crash on the Vancouver set of Deadpool 2 has been identified as the first African-American female professional road racer. Joi “SJ” Harris was doing her first film as a stunt performer, Deadline has learned.

Production on the superhero sequel was shut down immediately after the fatality, and there’s no word on when filming will resume. It’s the second on-set death in North America in a month; John Bernecker suffered massive head injuries in a fall July 12 on the set of The Walking Dead and died shortly afterward.

Details still are coming in, but witnesses said the crew was filming a stunt sequence when Harris lost control of her motorcycle and crashed through a plate-glass window at Shaw Tower on West Waterfront Road near Jack Poole Plaza. The stuntwoman was playing the Domino character in the sequence in the Ryan Reynolds superhero sequel. Actress Zazie Beetz is playing Domino in Deadpool 2.

A source close to the situation said Harris, who was an experienced road racer, had been rehearsing the stunt all day Saturday. A studio production source said that there were “two full days of rehearsals over the weekend, and on Monday, they ran the stunt five-plus times before filming.”

An eyewitness told Deadline that, on the last take, the bike seemed to accelerate when it was supposed to slow as she took the corner. Harris was not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred today because the Domino character did not wear one in the scene.

Deadline has been told that the crew is enduring very long hours — that includes weekends — and that workers feel like they are being run ragged. “People are exhausted by the schedule,” one crew member told Deadline, noting that they were working multiple 16-hour days in a row. That, however, is disputed by a studio production source, who said the daily shooting schedule on the Vancouver set is 12-13 hours, and there were only two 15-plus-hour days, about three weeks ago.

AMERICAN HONEY Star Sasha Lane Cast as Alice Monaghan in HELLBOY

rQMoX0x.jpg

American Honey's breakout star Sasha Lane is in final negotiations to join the Hellboy reboot.

Lionsgate and Millennium’s project will star David Harbour as the demonic hero from the Mike Mignola comic books. Neil Marshall, the horror director who broke out with The Descent and won raves for his work on Game of Thrones, is on board to helm.

The new story sees the hero squaring off against a medieval sorceress who seeks to destroy humankind. Lane would play Alice Monaghan. In the comic books, Hellboy rescues Alice from the fairies that kidnapped her. She retains some supernatural gifts because of her time with the fairies.

Later on in the continuity of the series, however, Monaghan appeared again as a grown woman where the two are brought together by fate and thanks to her connection to the fairy world. The pair grow close as well, falling in love as they travel the country side together.

Milla Jovovich and Ian McShane also are attached to star.

Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin are producing along with Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Entertainment. The project is eyeing a September shoot.

After her breakout performance in Andrea Arnold’s American Honey, Lane lined up a slew of projects that reflect her status as one of the indie world’s most in-demand actresses. She’s already shot Miseducation of Cameron Post with Chloe Moretz and Shotgun with Maika Monroe. She’s attached to Shoplifters of the World with Joe Manganiello and the sci-fi project Hunting Lila. Hellboy will be her first major studio project.

Daniel Craig Officially Confirms He Will Return to Play 007 in BOND 25

ioM7nmx.jpg

James Bond fans were shaken and stirred Tuesday night.

Daniel Craig officially confirmed he will return to the role of Agent 007 in the upcoming Bond 25 on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday. Craig had previously been attached to the project by reports from the New York Times and others, but never confirmed personally — until his appearance on Colbert's show.

"Yes," Craig told Colbert point-blank, when asked if he will return as the secret agent. He said he's known he would reprise the role for "a couple of months" now. "We've been discussing it, we've just been trying to figure things out," he explained, adding, "I always wanted to, I needed a break."

He also confirmed that it would be the last time he would tackle the iconic role, saying, "I just want to go out on a high note, and I can't wait."

Craig earlier Tuesday morning told a Boston radio program, "I'd hate to burst the bubble, but no decision has been made at the moment. There's a lot of noise out there and nothing official has been confirmed and I'm not, like, holding out for more money or doing anything like that. It's just all very personal decisions to be made at the moment," Craig said on Morning Magic 106.7. "I know they're desperate to get going and I would in theory love to do it, but there is no decision just yet."

Craig referenced these earlier interviews during his appearance on The Late Show saying, "I have to apologize to all the people I've done interviews with today, because I wanted to tell you," referring to Colbert.

Craig has been playing Agent 007 since 2006's Casino Royale, and has since starred in three other Bond films: 2008's Quantum of Solace, 2012's Skyfall and 2015's Spectre. Craig made headlines following the release of the latter for making negative comments about the possibility of continuing the role. "I'd rather break this glass and slash my wrists," the star told Time Out London in 2015 of a possible return to the role.

In regards to his comments, he told Colbert, "There's no point making excuses about it, but it was two days after I had finished shooting the last movie and I went straight to an interview where someone asked, 'Would you do another one?' and I went, 'No!'"

He added that instead of saying something "with style and grace" he said he gave "a really stupid answer."

The as-of-yet untitled Bond 25 was officially announced by EON Productions and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer last month with a slated Nov. 8, 2019 release date.

I'm glad Craig is coming back. Spectre was rough but none of the films have actually been bad. I mean, Skyfall was god damn brilliant.

OBI-WAN KENOBI Movie in the Works with Stephen Daldry in Talks to Direct

YTjcXlC.png

Stephen Daldry is Star Wars’ new hope. The Oscar-nominated director behind Billy Elliot and The Hours is in early talks to direct a Star Wars standalone movie centering on Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Sources say talks are at the earliest of stages and that the project has no script. If a deal makes, Daldry would oversee the development and writing with Lucasfilm brass. It's not known at this stage if Ewan McGregor will reprise his role.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone is one of several projects being developed by Lucasfilm and Disney that fall outside the trilogies telling the saga of the Skywalker family. A Han Solo movie is now in the final stages of shooting under new director Ron Howard and Lucasfilm is also looking at movies featuring Yoda and bounty hunter Boba Fett, among others.

In the original Star Wars trilogy, Kenobi was at first a desert-dwelling and war-weary hermit who later proved to be a wise and powerful warrior, brandishing a light saber. He was briefly a mentor to a young Luke before being cut down by Darth Vader, his former pupil. Alec Guinness played Kenobi, garnering him an Oscar nomination to boot.

The character got star treatment in the George Lucas-directed prequels which told the origin of Vader and his betrayal of Kenobi and the Jedis. McGregor has said he would be open to playing the character again. Sources stress, however, that since there is no script, no actor is attached.

Daldry hails from the theater world and made his feature debut with Billy Elliot, which netted him his first directing Oscar nomination. He followed that up with searing dramas The Hours and The Reader, which also netted him directing nominations.

He most recently directed episodes of Netflix’s period drama The Crown, which put him into play in this Emmy season.

one of my concerns with the new disney idea with star wars is how flat the universe will become; it'll sort of lose its mystery the more and more you get. Rogue One was amazing, imo, and I loved how the force awakens continues the original mythos... but eventually you'll hit a wall, you know?

Michael B. Jordan to Play a Mobster in A BITTERSWEET LIFE Remake

HJtjyUE.png

Fox is taking a fresh start on A Bittersweet Life, with Michael B. Jordan attached to star and Jennifer Yuh Nelson to direct the action-thriller remake of the cult classic 2005 Korean film.

Jordan will play a mobster whose longtime loyalties to his crime family are challenged when his boss orders him to kill a mistress he’s recently grown close to. The filmmakers see this as a high-concept, character-driven genre film with franchise potential.

21 Laps’ Shawn Levy, Dan Levine and Dan Cohen are producing in conjunction with CJ Entertainment, the latter of which made the original film. Jason Young will oversee for Fox.

Nelson comes from animation; she got an Oscar nom for directing Kung Fu Panda 2, and she co-directed Kung Fu Panda 3. She made her live-action debut directing the sci-fi thriller The Darkest Minds for Fox and 21 Laps, based on the Alexandra Bracken bestselling YA trilogy.

Patty Jenkins Returning to Direct WONDER WOMAN Sequel in Historic Deal

pswZcZx.jpg

It’s been over two months since Wonder Woman opened to a staggering $103.2M and went on to gross close to $800M worldwide for Warner Bros. (with Japan yet to bow). The movie, directed by Patty Jenkins, re-invigorated DC movies and the studio itself. Now Jenkins is returning to the director’s chair to helm the second film in the franchise that she was so instrumental in starting.

Last month at Comic-Con, the studio confirmed both a sequel with Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot and a release date of Dec. 13, 2019. However, curiously, there was no deal with Jenkins. Why the delay? Because Jenkins — who was lauded repeatedly during the Women in Film Crystal Awards this year by several of its nominees — expects to be paid substantially more and the same as a male director would receive after such a box office coup. That desire was seconds away from becoming a reality on Thursday evening as a deal was being finalized which would elevate her as the highest-paid female director in town.

And why not? Wonder Woman shattered several glass ceilings at the box office, including the best opening ever for a title by a female director and the best global haul for a live-action film directed by a woman as well as the third-highest grossing film in Warner Bros.’ history (behind only Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight series).

Although no payday was revealed, Deadline understands that her payday and deal is in line with any other director who has performed at this level. A studio source said they were “confident the deal will be reached soon.”

Typically, according to sources, a frosh director on a comic book movie gets $1.5M to $3M, while a director in the realm of Zack Snyder (who is helming DC’s Justice League) received $10M against 10% cash break even for his second DC film Man of Steel. (That’s usually paid out as 20% during pre-production, 60% during production, 10% during post and 10% following).

Jenkins burst on the scene with the critically acclaimed indie film Monster in 2003 — she wrote and directed while Charlize Theron won Best Actress — then directed a number of TV episodes for such shows as Entourage and The Killing before she was hired on for Wonder Woman. She handled the female super-hero film with a deft hand. Wonder Woman will go over $800M worldwide soon as it opens in Japan on Aug. 25.
