Ben Affleck's Batman Future in Doubt as Warner Bros. Plans to Replace Him

VIyRVwY.jpg

Ben Affleck is heading to Comic-Con this weekend to promote Warner Bros.’ upcoming Justice League movie, set for a Nov. 17 release. But how many more times is he likely to put on the Batsuit? Probably not many, if ever again.

Yes, Warners’ film studio chief Toby Emmerich tells The Hollywood Reporter, "Ben is our Batman. We love him as Batman. We want to keep him in the cowl as long as we can." And Matt Reeves, who will direct the studio’s still-undated (and unwritten) The Batman, has said that he means to keep Affleck in the role. But a source with knowledge of the situation says that the studio is working on plans to usher out Affleck’s Batman — gracefully, addressing the change in some shape or form in one of the upcoming DC films.

Exactly when and how that might happen has yet to be determined, but it would be wise to bet against Affleck starring in The Batman. He has already stepped away from directing the film and Reeves is dropping the script that Affleck wrote with D.C. Entertainment’s Geoff Johns.

Reeves also has acknowledged that he has a Batman trilogy rolling around in his head, and given his success making two-thirds of a trilogy out of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes, it seems fair to anticipate that Warners will want him to realize his vision.

In addition, Affleck will turn 45 in August, so he would be pushing 50 before The Batman arrives in theaters. If Reeves makes a trilogy, Affleck would be in his mid-50s at best by the time that’s done. Maybe Tom Cruise could pull that off, but Affleck’s body hasn’t exactly been a temple.

And while male stars have been able to stretch their action-film relevance further in an age when there are fewer bankable young stars (Robert Downey Jr. is 52 and going strong as Iron Man), studios favor the fresh-faced — look what happened with Spider-Man, successfully rebooted with 21-year-old Tom Holland. (Affleck also just dropped out of the Netflix project Triple Frontier, and it’s not clear what his next movie will be. His reps declined to comment.)

Warners could hypothetically create dual Batmen, keeping Affleck in the role for a planned Justice League follow-up, while letting Reeves cast his movie with a different star. But that hardly seems likely. The first Justice League already is at an inflection point: Director Zack Snyder has stepped away in mid-production and his successor, Joss Whedon, is said to be doing extensive reshoots. (Note that Justice League member Superman is played by Henry Cavill, 34, The Flash is Ezra Miller, 24, Aquaman is Jason Momoa, 37, and Wonder Woman is 32-year-old Gal Gadot.) And a second Justice League movie would be years down the road.

SPAWN Movie Officially Announced with Todd MacFarlane to Write and Direct

Todd McFarlane has found a home for his forthcoming Spawn movie, the Image Comics co-founder announced today.

The movie -- which McFarlane has said will be a horror-focused movie with a budget in the neighborhood of $10 million -- is headed to Blumhouse, the studio known for films like The Purge, Paranormal Activity, and The Belko Experiment. McFarlane will direct.

"Having worked with many visionary directors, I think Todd's unique artistic talents will only add to his role as director of this film," said Blumhouse chief Jason Blum.

McFarlane has written the first draft of the screenplay, which the announcement for the movie described as a "dark exploration of one of comics’ most popular characters." McFarlane is known for reinventing the look of Spider-Man as well as co-creating the Venom character for Marvel Comics.

McFarlane has been working on a script and teasing a revival of the Spawn franchise for years. The previous film iteration starred Michael Jai White and was released in 1998. It was critically panned, earning just 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. While that version of the movie looked and felt like a superhero film, the new Spawn will be decidedly less so.

Sylvester Stallone Confirms Ivan Drago in CREED Sequel

In a new Instagram post, Rocky creator Sylvester Stallone confirmed several things about MGM‘s in-development Creed II. For one, that he himself has written the full script, or at least what will serve as the basis for the script, after Ryan Coogler and Aaron Covington wrote the last one by themselves.

Second, he has solidified what many had assumed for a while, which is that Dolph Lundgren’s Ivan Drago, and probably his offspring, will be involved in a big bloody battle with Adonis Creed in the ring.

Paramount Pushes New Cloverfield Movie GOD PARTICLE to February 2018

oU7R1cA.jpg

Paramount Pictures has done some moving around with their upcoming release schedule, moving two potential award contenders ahead and delaying the next Cloverfield movie.

The next entry in the Cloverfield franchise, currently known as God Particle, has been bumped from October 27 of this year to February 2, 2018. The only other film scheduled for that release date is the horror film Cadaver.

God Particle is directed by Julius Onah (The Girl is in Trouble) and was originally scripted by Freaks of Nature and 22 Jump Street scribe Oren Uziel. The project was since rewritten by Star Trek Beyond‘s Doug Jung.

The plot for God Particle is said to revolve around an American space station that, after an accident with a particle accelerator, suddenly finds that Earth has vanished altogether. Things get stranger when they then pick up traces of another space station nearby. It stars David Oyelowo, John Krasinski, Elizabeth Debicki, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris O’Dowd, Ziyi Zhang and Daniel Bruhl.

John Heard, Dad from HOME ALONE Movies, Dies at 72

Actor John Heard, best known for his role as the father to Macaulay Culkin's character in the '90s Home Alone films, died on Saturday, the Santa Clara County coroner's office confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 72.

The cause of Heard's death is still under investigation.

In addition to his role as Peter McCallister in Home Alone, Heard also had many other acting credits that include Big, The Pelican Brief, Miami Vice, Modern Family and many, many more. Heard earned an Emmy nomination for best guest star in a drama series in 1999 for his role as Detective Vin Makazian on HBO's The Sopranos.

Recently, he appeared on WGN's TV drama Outsiders and CBS' MacGyver.

Heard began his acting career on the stage in the 1970s before making the leap to the screen. His breakthrough role came in 1981 when he starred beside Jeff Bridges in Cutter's Way.

The star was briefly married to Superman actress Margot Kidder and later had a child with actress Melissa Leo. He had two other children with second wife, Sharon Heard.

Michelle Pfeiffer and Laurence Fishburne Joins Marvel's ANT-MAN AND THE WASP

osZUo5R.jpg

Michelle Pfeiffer and Laurence Fishburne are joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The actress will play Janet Van Dyne, the superhero wife of Hank Pym/original Ant-Man (Michael Douglas) in the film and mother to (Hope) Evangeline Lilly. The announcement was made at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday during Marvel Studios' Hall H panel.

In Marvel's comic books, Janet Van Dyne is the original Wasp and a founding member — and one-time leader — of the Avengers. Van Dyne continued as a superhero even after Pym retired from adventuring, until she was lost in a sub-atomic realm and assumed dead. (She later returned, entirely healthy, because comics.) In Marvel's Ant-Man film, Pym mourns the loss of his wife, who has been lost in the sub-atomic realm in an act of heroism (she was disabling a rocket).

Fishburne's character, Bill Foster, was a scientist who worked alongside Hank Pym, later becoming a size-changing superhero in his own right, initially as Black Goliath, and then taking over the role of Giant-Man from Pym. A long-running guest-star in series such as Marvel Two-in-One and The Champions, Foster was one of the first casualties of Marvel's original Civil War comic book in 2006.

Also revealed: a character called The Ghost will be in the film which will be played by Hannah John-Kamen (Syfy's Killjoys). The Ghost is a relatively obscure Marvel villain who fits into the set-up of the Ant-Man movies — originally an Iron Man villain, the mysterious character (who is never seen unmasked) started as an industrial saboteur by trade who quickly fell into a world of paranoid delusion where he trusted no-one, and worked for whichever side served his own best interests at the time.

Both Pfeiffer and Fishburne are already Comic-Con favorites. Pfeiffer starred as Catwoman in 1992's Batman Returns, while Fishburne is revered among the geek faithful for his work as Morpheus in The Matrix trilogy.

Peyton Reed will return to direct star Paul Rudd as the titular hero. Ant-Man and the Wasp opens July 6, 2018.

Sarah Paulson has signed on for M. Night Shyamalan's thriller Glass. The American Horror Story actress joins James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, who already have boarded the Universal film.

Written by Shyamalan, Glass is a sequel to the writer-director's 2000 thriller Unbreakable, which centered on a man (Willis) who learns something extraordinary about himself after a devastating accident.

Jason Blum, Marc Bienstock, Ashwin Rajan and Shyamalan are producing Glass. The film has been dated by Universal for Jan. 18, 2019.

Shyamalan announced the news in a tweet, writing: "Incredibly fortunate to round out our iconic cast of actors on #Glass... @MsSarahPaulson will be joining us. #powerhouse."

Paulson recently shot the female-centric Ocean's Eight for Warner Bros. and is currently in production on Steven Spielberg's The Papers opposite Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep. Paulson won an Emmy in 2016 for her role as Marcia Clark in American Crime Story.

Next James Bond Movie Set for 2019; Daniel Craig Not Included in Announcement

nCmSrKX.png

007 will be back in 2019.

The next installment in the James Bond franchise has set a release date of Nov. 8, 2019. This will be the 25th installment in the long-running series.

Daniel Craig, who has held a license to kill since first playing Bond in 2006's Casino Royale, has not been announced as being back as the British Secret Service agent, with EON Productions and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer saying casting will be announced at a later date. A director has also not been revealed (Sam Mendes helmed the previous two installments).

The script is coming from Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who worked on Craig's four Bond films: Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall and Spectre.

While the date is set, many other things about Bond 25 remain unclear. MGM and EON have no U.S. studio partner on the movie and are in secret talks with several contenders after its four-picture deal with Sony expired with Spectre. Sources say Sony and Warner Bros. are vying for the rights.

It is also unclear whether Craig will return. The actor has spoken disdainfully about continuing as Bond in the past, but more recent rumors have painted a more softened tone from the actor. Among the stars who have been seen as waiting in the wings to take on the role should Craig retire include Idris Elba, Tim Hiddleston, Damien Lewis, Tom Hardy and The Hobbit actor Aidan Turner.

The franchise has been very successful with Craig in the starring role. 2012's Skyfall earned $1.1 billion, while 2015's Spectre earned $880 million.

Bond 25 will be produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. It is set to open the same day as an untitled Disney fairy tale movie.

Next James Bond Movie Sets November 8, 2019 Release Date

Comments: Michael Fassbender or Aidan Turner would be my choices for the next James Bond. Bah, who needs 007 when you have Kingsman.

Anne Hathaway in Talks to Replace Amy Schumer in BARBIE Movie

q8OQYuB.png

Anne Hathaway is getting behind the wheel of the pink dream convertible for Sony's Barbie movie.

The Oscar winner is in negotiations to star in the long-in-the-works feature project, putting on the outfit that was originally going to be worn by Amy Schumer. (Schumer was announced to star in December, but dropped out in March, citing "scheduling conflicts.")

At the same time, rising Australian director Alethea Jones is in talks to helm the pic after being handpicked by Hathaway, who was integral in the search for a filmmaker.

The Barbie movie (at least, the Schumer version) was to turn the classic Barbie mythology on its head, putting a contemporary spin on the toy with an emphasis on feminism and identity. The script told of a woman that slowly awakens to the fact that she doesn’t fit into the perfect land of Barbies and journeys to the real world, where she discovers that being unique is an asset. The fish-out-of-water tale is supposed to be in the vein of Big or Enchanted.

Amy Pascal, Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing. RIchard Dickson, president and COO of Mattel, is executive producing.

The studio is still eyeing a June 29, 2018, release, but one issue that is keeping things in flux is Hathaway's schedule. Sony is hesitant to move the release date, and there's a chance that if Hathaway's schedule isn't worked out in a satisfactory way, a deal may not be made.

Hathaway was last seen in the indie Colossal and will next be seen palling around with Rihanna and Sarah Paulson in Ocean's 8 and with Rebel Wilson in Nasty Women, MGM's remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
