Kurt Russell is the only man that can pull off that kind of mustache. It's too dominant for Branagh. Oh & I'm shocked Depp isn't the most dangerously flamboyant looking person in that whole cast.

Tom Hardy to Star as Eddie Brock in Sony's VENOM with Ruben Fleischer to Direct

Sony has ensnared a star and director for its Spider-Man offshoot, Venom.

Tom Hardy, who was nominated for an Oscar for his work in The Revenant, is in final negotiations to star in Venom, while Ruben Fleischer, best known for directing Zombieland, is final negotiations to helm the movie project centering on one of Spider-Man’s signature villains.

The project is one of Sony’s top priorities and the studio is not wasting time as the movie is set to open Oct. 5, 2018.

Venom is to usher in a host of movies from Sony's Marvel and Spider-Man-based universe of characters. Sony is rebooting its Marvel-based slate with this summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and Venom is a key title in its slate. The studio is also developing a Silver Sable/Black Cat project among other characters from the Spider-Man stable.

Venom has been one of Marvel’s top villains and a Spider-Man fixture since he was introduced in 1988, created by writer David Michelinie and artists Todd McFarlane and Mike Zeck. The character is an alien symbiote that needs a human host to survive. In return, the alien vests its victim with incredible powers. He made his first big-screen appearance in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 and was portrayed by Topher Grace.

Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, the latter of whom worked on 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, wrote the script for Venom. Plot details are being kept in the black but Hardy, who is said to be a Venom fan, will play Eddie Brock, the character who first became Venom.

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing, along with Amy Pascal.

After the news broke, Sony shared a photo of Hardy getting in the Venom spirit:

SCARFACE Gets SUICIDE SQUAD and END OF WATCH Direct David Ayer

After tackling supervillains with Suicide Squad, David Ayer is heading back to the streets of Los Angeles.

Ayer, who won acclaim penning the hard-hitting Training Day and making gritty movies such as End of Watch, is in talks to direct Universal's Scarface, which is trading in its Miami locale for the streets of L.A.

Scarface tells the story of the rise and fall of a gangster, which has seen previous versions made in 1932 and 1983, the latter of which came from director Brian De Palma and starred Al Pacino.

Diego Luna is still attached to play the west coast Latino gangster, with Jon Herman penning the most recent rewrite of the remake. Dylan Clark will produce via his Dylan Clark Productions, along with Martin Bregman, who produced the 1983 Scarface film.

The search for the Scarface director has been a long one. Equalizer and Training Day director Antoine Fuqua was attached to the project, before dropping out due to scheduling conflicts at the beginning of this year. Hell or High Water director David MacKenzie and Patriots Day helmer Peter Berg were also at one point circling the project.

After directing the Warner Bros. anti-hero ensemble Suicide Squad, Ayer is heading to computer screens everywhere with the Netflix fantasy movie Bright, starring Will Smith. He is also attached to a Warner's remake of the western The Wild Bunch and to re-team with his Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie for Gotham City Sirens, which will be lead by Robbie's Harley Quinn.

Jesse Eisenberg to Play Legendary Mime Marcel Marceau in RESISTANCE

Jesse Eisenberg has been tapped to play legendary mime Marcel Marceau in Resistance. Jonathan Jakubowicz (Hands of Stone) will direct and write the picture.

This won’t be the usual artist biopic, however. The film will focus on Marceau’s involvement in the French resistance when his country was occupied by the Nazis during World War II.

The film’s backers compare it to Life Is Beautiful, the 1999 Oscar-winner about a man using comedy to help his son cope with the Holocaust. In a similar vein, Marceau learned to mime to survive and to save the lives of Jewish orphans whose parents had just been killed by the Nazis. Before taking on his stage persona of Bip the Clown, he was born Marcel Mangel to a kosher butcher from Strasbourg. His father was eventually killed in Auschwitz.

Marceau gave his first major performance to 3,000 American troops of General Patton’s army after the liberation of Paris in August 1944. He went on to perform for six more decades, winning an Emmy and numerous other honors. He was made Grand Officier de la Légion d’Honneur (1998) and was awarded the National Order of Merit (1998) in France for his work in the resistance.

RESIDENT EVIL Franchise Set for a Reboot

The Resident Evil movie franchise has not ended after all.

Details such as the reboot director, stars, and how the reboot would fit into the franchise narrative are being kept under wraps. But Martin Moszkowicz, chairman of the board at Constantin Film, did confirm to Variety at the Cannes Film Festival that a reboot is in development at the giant German production company, which owns rights to the franchise and has produced all of its installments.

The franchise was set to end with this year’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which grossed $312 million worldwide after its January release, including an eye-popping $160 million in China alone. Sony helped sow the seeds of success by securing a release for Resident Evil: Afterlife and Resident Evil: Extinction in China.

Based on the Capcom video game, the series launched in 2002 with Paul W.S. Anderson directing, and Anderson, Jeremy Bolt, Bernd Eichinger, and Samuel Hadida producing the first of a six-movie series. The Resident Evil movie franchise has earned $1.2 billion worldwide to date, making it Europe’s most successful independent horror-genre movie franchise in history and the highest-grossing film series to be based on a video game.

Distributed by Screen Gems in the U.S., all six Resident Evils have starred Milla Jovovich. Anderson has written all six of the installments and directed four. His involvement on a reboot is open to question, however, as he prepares Monster Hunter, again inspired by a video game from Japan’s Capcom, which is set to be brought to the market in late 2017 or early 2018.

I don't know. That franchise was built on Milla Jovovich.

As far as I understand it, never having played the games, the movies weren't a very faithful adaptation of the games, so it wasn't the IP that made the films successful.

Considering the track record of video game movies, I don't see this franchise going anywhere without her.

Arnold Schwarzenegger to Star in James Cameron's New TERMINATOR Film

Arnold Schwarzenegger has said that he will be returning to the Terminator franchise and that a planned Twins sequel is set to go ahead soon.

Speaking to Screen in Cannes, where he is talking up new environmentally-focused documentary Wonders Of The Sea 3D with producer Francois Mantello [pictured right] and co-directors Jean-Michel Cousteau and Jean-Jacques Mantello, Schwarzenegger confirmed that he will star in a new Terminator film produced by James Cameron.

“It is back,” commented Schwarzenegger, who revealed that he had met Cameron recently and discussed the project. “It is moving forward. He [Cameron] has some good ideas of how to continue with the franchise,” the actor added, “I will be in the movie.”

He also said that a potential Conan reboot starring Schwarzenegger isn’t dead. “It’s being rewritten…the idea is to do it.”

Schwarzenegger also confirmed that the mooted Triplets project, the sequel to 1986 comedy Twins, could go into production this year.

“The script will be finished in a month”, he said, confirming that he would be starring alongside Danny DeVito and Eddie Murphy, and that original producer-director Ivan Reitman is involved in the project. “It’s just around the corner,” he said.

Tom Holland to Star as Young Nathan Drake in UNCHARTED Movie

Sony Pictures is bullish enough on its upcoming Spider-Man Homecoming star Tom Holland that the studio is doubling down on the young actor by building a second major franchise around him.

Holland is attaching to star in Uncharted, in what will be redrafted as a prequel to the treasure hunting action story line in the Naughty Dog video game for PlayStation. Shawn Levy is directing a film that will take its inspiration from a sequence in the third iteration of the video game that focused on the young thief Drake, and his first encounter with the professional rogue, Sullivan.

This reformulation of the franchise was an inspiration of Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman after seeing the latest cut of the Spider-Man film, sources said. The studio has tried for years with various directors to get this video game to launch a franchise, with past scripts from Joe Carnahan, David Guggenheim and Eric Warren Singer.

Sony Pictures will now set a new scribe to draft the story line that captures the protagonist as he grows into the treasure hunter Nathan Drake who made the game a top seller. Uncharted is produced by Charles Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner and Ari Arad.

James Wan to Produce RESIDENT EVIL Reboot from Greg Russo Script

More details are leaking out on the Resident Evil franchise reboot. James Wan has come aboard to produce the first of the Resident Evil reboots from a script by Greg Russo, and we’re hearing and it will have an entirely new cast.

Russo wrote Mortal Kombat and Wan is known for producing the box office coups Lights Out, Annabelle and Saw, to name a few.

The Wan brand name is a strong one and should give a boost to the reboot. Also producing are Constantin Film and Michael Clear for Atomic Monster. It has no director aboard as yet, according to Deadline.

Wan and Russo worked previously together on Mortal Kombat, which is getting its own reboot through New Line. They also worked together on Robotech for Sony.

Wan, who is currently directing Aquaman for Warner Bros, will produce the Resident Evil reboot pic (the first of six, as reported by our sister publication Variety) for Constatin Films and Screen Gems. They have been in business for the previous wave of films in the franchise.

Zack Snyder Steps Down from JUSTICE LEAGUE as Joss Whedon Takes Over Post-Production

Zack Snyder tells The Hollywood Reporter he is stepping away from Justice League, Warner Bros.’ all-star DC Comics superhero mega-movie that is in post-production, in order to deal with the sudden death of his daughter. Snyder's wife, Deborah Snyder, who is a producer on Justice League, also is taking a break to focus on the healing of their family.

Stepping in to shepherd the movie through post and the shooting of some additional scenes will be Joss Whedon, the Avengers filmmaker and creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. With Whedon's help, the movie is still on track for its Nov. 17 release date.

Snyder’s daughter, Autumn Snyder, died by suicide in March at age 20. Her death has been kept private, with only a small inner circle aware of what happened, even as the movie was put on a two-week break for the Snyders to deal with the immediate effects of the tragedy. Zack Snyder says he initially was eager to return to the film, which stars Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller.

“In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was way through it,” says an emotional Snyder in an interview Monday in his office on the Warner Bros. lot with Deborah sitting by his side. “The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all consuming. And in the last two months I’ve come to the realization …I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I’m having a hard time.”

The studio is fully behind the move. “What they are going through is unimaginable, and my heart — our hearts — go out to them, says Warner Bros. Pictures president Toby Emmerich.

One of the first things the studio floated was the possibility of pushing back the release date of the movie, but the Snyders decided against that suggestion. Warners also extended Snyder's first-look deal to give him time to work on other planned projects when he returns to work.

Snyder, after screening a rough cut of Justice League for fellow filmmakers and friends, wanted to add additional scenes, so he brought Whedon on board to write them. But as he prepared to shoot the scenes in England, Snyder realized it was not the time to leave home. “The directing is minimal and it has to adhere to the style and tone and the template that Zack set,” says Emmerich. “We’re not introducing any new characters. It’s the same characters in some new scenes. He’s handing a baton to Joss but the course has really been set by Zack. I still believe that despite this tragedy, we’ll still end up with a great movie.”

The death of Autumn, Zack's daughter from his first marriage (in addition to Autumn, he and Deborah have been raising seven kids and step-kids) has brought a new perspective and a new focus for him. “I want the movie to be amazing and I’m a fan, but that all pales pretty quickly in comparison," he says. “I know the fans are going to be worried about the movie but there are seven other kids that need me,” he says. “ In the end, it’s just a movie. It’s a great movie. But it’s just a movie.

Autumn, who was attending Sarah Lawrence College, loved “to write, to write, to write,” says Deborah. Their daughter had written a sci-fi fantasy novel in the first person. It featured a character who was an outsider and who had trouble fitting in.

DARK UNIVERSE Announced as the Name for Universal's Monster Universe

Bill Condon to Direct BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN Starring Javier Bardem

Universal Pictures' classic monsters shared universe is now officially known as the Dark Universe franchise. And with that naming comes the announcement of several key roles.

The studio revealed today that the shared universe, which kicks off with The Mummy, will also include Johnny Depp as The Invisible Man and Javier Bardem as Frankenstein’s Monster, in addition to The Mummy's Tom Cruise (Nick Morton), Russell Crowe (Dr. Jekyll), and Sofia Boutella (The Mummy).

The next film in the shared universe will be Bride of Frankenstein, directed by Beauty and the Beast's Bill Condon for a February 14, 2019 release. As part of Bride of Frankenstein's release reveal, Universal confirmed that there will no longer be a Dark Universe film hitting theaters on April 13, 2018, as previously announced.

Dark Universe's core creatives are The Mummy director Alex Kurtzman, Chris Morgan (producer behind The Fast and the Furious Franchise), Christopher McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation director), and David Koepp (writer of 2002's Spider-Man).

Russell Crowe's Dr. Jekyll will be linking the films together with his organization Prodigium, which is charged with tracking the world's monsters — a website for Prodigum has also launched ahead of The Mummy's debut.

Bride of Frankenstein is described as the "story of a very modern woman in a very classic tale," according to Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley. The actress portraying the Bride will be announced soon.
