Warner Bros. Sets READY PLAYER ONE for December 15, 2017

Warner-Bros-Ready-Player-One-Dragonlord.jpg

Warner Bros. has set a release date for Ready Player One, and director Steven Spielberg is still attached. The pic will drop on December 15, 2017, which as of right now is fairly barren. WB is marking its flag in the holiday territory, and it’s doing so with a big sci-fi adventure film adapted from a beloved book, directed by Steven Spielberg. Zak Penn wrote the script, and the film is being produced by Spielberg, Donald De Line, Dan Farah, and Spielberg’s longtime colleague Christie Macosko Krieger.

For those unfamiliar with the source material, the story takes place in 2044 and revolves around the poverty-stricken Wade Watts, who’s only escape is trying to solve a decades old game from the late James Halliday creator of the worldwide, virtual reality space, OASIS. Working along the lines of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, if Wade can progress through the VR game, he gets to own OASIS, which is pretty much the equivalent of owning the Internet. The trick to beating the game is to figure out how to decipher the clues that are rooted in Halliday’s love of 1980s pop culture.

“Any film from Steven Spielberg is an event film, so it felt right to date this thrilling new project from one of our greatest filmmakers for the holiday season,” said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros.’ president of domestic distribution, in a release.

Once Remy won, he got booted from New Orleans and left without Bella Donna.

Rumor: CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Team Sides Revealed

Marvel-Civil-War-080715-Dragonlord.jpg

Marvel's Captain America: Civil War is based around one simple, yet tricky question: Whose side are you on? Umberto Gonzalez's latest scoop let's us know where each superhero stands.

As you know, there will be two main teams/sides: Team Captain America and Team Iron Man. When public sentiment turns against superheroes, the United States government uses the opportunity to install a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. Captain America isn't in favor of this as the governing body could do more harm than good as it has the power to determine who is a hero and who is a villain.

Joining Captain America (Chris Evans) on his crusade will be Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).

While Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) will oppose them with The Vision (Paul Bettany), Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and War Machine (Don Cheadle).

Gonzalez added this plot tease: "Can you guess which Avenger might be a double agent?" Black Panther has already been confirmed by Kevin Feige personally as being neutral. He is on a mission. Captain America: Civil War opens in theaters May 6, 2016.

Chilling New Trailer at Epic Mountain Climbing Drama EVEREST

Everest-Jason-Clarke-080715-Dragonlord.jpg

If you only see one film in 3D IMAX this year, Everest's combination of disaster epic and National Geographic snowscape cinematography is probably the one to don your goggles for. Contraband's Baltasar Kormakur directs Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson and Jake Gyllenhaal, and here's a new IMAX-branded trailer to give a brass monkey pause.

Everest's story is of the 1996 events, made famous by Jon Krakauer's book Into Thin Air (already filmed as a TV movie with Christopher McDonald as Krakauer), in which three separate Everest expeditions ran into tragic difficulty in a sudden storm. This version of what happened is drawn from more sources than just Krakauer however, including other books and new interviews with the survivors. The screenplay is by William Nicholson (Gladiator, Les Mis

HANSEL & GRETEL 2 Gets Award-Winning Commercial Director

Hansel-Gretel-Jeremy-Renner-080715-Dragonlord.jpg

Paramount first announced plans to develop a Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters sequel shortly after the original hit theaters. But that was back in March 2013. As happens with many projects in development, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2 didn’t seem to be moving forward. Writer Tommy Wirkola confirmed that he gave the studio the finished script back in November, but he also warned, “It’s up to them now.” Well, it turns out that Paramount is forging forward.

Bruno Aveillan is set to make his feature directorial debut on Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2 for Paramount. Aveillan is an award-winning commercials director known for his blend of cinematic style and groundbreaking effects, which he displayed with short films for branded content that included Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Swarovski, Crystals, Audi and Samsung. Tommy Wirkola wrote and directed the original.

Aveillan will continue the adventures of the witch-hunting siblings played by Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton. Compared to the flood of revisionist fairy tales for family audiences, this was a raucous, raunchy gem and audiences responded. The $50 million-budget film grossed $226 million and did especially strong business overseas. There is certainly room to grow this into a franchise. Adam McKay, Will Ferrell and Kevin Messick are producing.

Bill Murray to Appear in Paul Feig's GHOSTBUSTERS Reboot

Bill-Murray-Ghostbusters-080915-Dragonlord.jpg

Bill Murray ain't afraid of no reboot. The actor, who played Dr. Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989), will appear in director Paul Feig's upcoming installment of the franchise, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Last Thursday, photo news agency FameFlynet (via SHH) photographed Murray on his way to the Boston, Massachusetts set of Feig's Ghostbusters. Murray has long been resistant to star in a third Ghostbusters. He told David Letterman earlier this year that his hesitancy stems from Ghostbusters II not having been as well-received as the first one.

BMD reports that Murray is likely playing a character named Martin Heis, a role that was written specifically for him. The character is a tiny role, and his job is a professional supernatural debunker, who shows up and proves the new Ghostbusters are fakes.

Feig's film, which is currently shooting, stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Chris Hemsworth, Neil Casey, Andy Garcia, Michael K. Williams and Cecily Strong. It hits theaters on July 22, 2016.

NEMESIS No Longer at Fox, Warner Bros. Pictures to Adapt

Warner-Bros-Nemesis-081015b-Dragonlord.jpg

The film adaptation of Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's Nemesis is moving from Twentieth Century Fox to Warner Bros. Pictures, according to The Tracking Board. Nemesis is a four-issue miniseries published at Marvel Comics imprint Icon.

The series asks the question "What if Batman was the Joker?" It follows the exploits of billionaire and worlds-greatest-fighter Matt Anderson, who becomes obsessed with avenging the death of his supervillain parents. He begins a one-man campaign of terrorism, killing police and kidnapping the chief who brought his parents to justice.

Contrary to the initial report by The Tracking Board, Nemesis is not owned by Marvel, but by Millar. However, it is still curious that Fox would pass on the film adaptation, considering the success the studio had adapting Millar's The Secret Service into Kingman and that Millar works on Fox's Marvel properties. It may be stranger still that Warner Bros. is the studio to pick the film up, considering rumors that Warner Bros. and comic book subsidiary DC Comics were unhappy with Millar's use of Batman and The Joker in the series' description.

Nemesis is still being produced by Ridley Scott's Scott Free. Drew Crevello and Nik Mavinkurve will produce on Warner Bros.' behalf. Smokin' Aces director Joe Carnahan was attached to direct for Fox, but it's unclear if he remains on board as the project jumps studios. Carnahan also wrote the latest version of the film's script, with his brother, Matthew Michael Carnahan.

Zac Efron Joins BAYWATCH; The Rock Reveals Film is Rated-R

Zac-Efron-Neighbors-0-Dragonlord.jpg

Zac Efron is suiting up in red bathing trunks and hitting the beach. Efron is in negotiations to star opposite Dwayne Johnson in Paramount’s Baywatch. After years of development, the project seems to finally be ramping up and in recent weeks it added Seth Gordon as director. Efron’s casting sets the movie up for a production start in early 2016, likely in February.

The story centers on a by-the-book and very serious lifeguard (Johnson) who is forced to team up with a young rule-flouting hothead (Efron) in order to save their beach from environmental destruction at the hands of an oil tycoon. Damian Shannon and Mark Swift wrote the most recent draft.

Johnson also confirmed in Twitter that the Baywatch movie will be rated-R. Johnson said, "Big News: Welcoming my dude @ZacEfron to #Baywatch. Our movie will be big, fun and RATED R.. Like me when I drink."

The Baywatch casting is a cresting of a wave of sorts for Efron who, due to his surprising and successful turn opposite Seth Rogen in Neighbors, caused both audiences and industry execs to see him in a new light, beyond the teen heartthrob shadow that followed him. It also has made him a wanted man, who's is now working across several studios and practically back to back.

Efron just wrapped production on the comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates along with Adam Devine, Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza. That comes on the heels of his work with Robert De Niro for Lionsgate’s road trip comedy Dirty Grandpa. And at the end of August, Efron will reunite with Rogen and Rose Byrne for Neighbors 2, which shoots in Atlanta. All three movies will be released in 2016.

DiCaprio, Scorsese Teaming Up For DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY

Leonardo-DiCaprio-Martin-Scorsese-081015-Dragonlord.jpg

The feature adaptation of Devil in the White City is back at Paramount, with Leonardo DiCaprio having enlisted his frequent collaborator Martin Scorsese to help make his passion project into a reality. Paramount, after having acquired and let go of the project twice before, has scooped up the project, with DiCaprio on board to star, Scorsese to direct and Billy Ray to write the script, THR has confirmed.

The project was previously at Warners and has been kicking around in development on and off since about 2003. But it always attracted the best talent. Tom Cruise was to star and produce an adaptation and later Kathryn Bigelow was attached to direct and produce. Paramount let the rights lapse in 2004 and again in 2007; the period setting posed budgetary challenges. It was in 2010 when DiCaprio, long fascinated by the dark subject matter, nabbed the rights himself, spending the last six years nurturing it.

White City is a nonfiction story that focuses on the lives of two men who turned the 1893 Chicago World's Fair into their playground. One of them, Daniel H. Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair's construction, in a short period of time was forced to overcome immense obstacles to construct the famous "White City" around which the fair was built.

The other, H.H. Holmes, was a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor who is believed to be responsible for scores of murders around the time of the fair. Holmes devised and erected the World's Fair Hotel, complete with crematorium and gas chamber, near the fairgrounds and used the event as well as his charismatic personality to lure victims to their death. DiCaprio will play the murderous Holmes. The plan is for this to be Scorsese

Tom Hardy to Produce and Possibly Star in 100 BULLETS Movie

Tom-Hardy-100-Bullets-081115-Dragonlord.jpg

New Line and Tom Hardy are loading up on 100 Bullets. In the first move since assuming oversight of DC Entertainment’s Vertigo comics imprint from corporate parent Warner Bros., New Line is developing an adaptation of the acclaimed comic by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso.

Hardy, who played villain Bane in The Dark Knight Rises as well as starred in this summer’s Mad Max: Fury Road, is on board to produce the adaptation with an eye to star. He will produce with Dean Baker via the duo’s Hardy Son & Baker production shingle. The project is already down the line in development, having a script by Chris Borrelli, whose credits include the recent supernatural horror movie The Vatican Tapes.

Running for 100 issues from 1999 to 2009, the acclaimed comic centered on an enigmatic man named Agent Graves as he presents different people, for reasons unknown, with a gun, the identity of the person who ruined their lives … and a hundred rounds of untraceable ammunition. Over the course of the series emerged a large crime saga that won accolades in the form of Eisner and Harvey Awards for Azzarello, Risso and the comic. The plot for movie is being kept locked in a briefcase but insiders say the plan is to stay true to the comic.

Aaron Eckhart Joins Tom Hanks in Sully Sullenberger Movie

Aaron-Eckhart-081115-Dragonlord.jpg

Aaron Eckhart is joining Tom Hanks in Warner Bros.' Capt. Sully movie. Hanks will star as Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, the pilot who safely landed his plane full of 155 passengers in the Hudson River after both engines were knocked out by a flock of geese. The "Miracle on the Hudson" made national headlines in January 2009, and Capt. Sully was deemed the "Captain Cool" by then-New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Eckhart will play Jeff Skiles, who was the first officer and co-pilot on the Airbus A320. He was manually flying the plane when the birds crashed into the engines. He helped Sully safely land the US Airways plane. Clint Eastwood will direct the film, which will have a script by Todd Komarnicki, who is drawing from Sullenberger's life and memoir.

Warner Bros. is behind the movie, which is being produced by Eastwood, Tim Moore and veteran producers Allyn Stewart and Frank Marshall. Eckhart most recently was seen in I, Frankenstein and Olympus Has Fallen, and he’ll reprise his role from the latter for the sequel, London Has Fallen. He’ll also be seen in the boxing drama Bleed for This with Miles Teller.

First Trailer for Quentin Tarantino's THE HATEFUL EIGHT

1f7a7d.jpg

The Weinstein Company has released the first trailer for Quentin Tarantino‘s Western The Hateful Eight. The story follows a group of passengers on a stagecoach that get caught and trapped in a blizzard in Wyoming, where they’re forced to confront the ratcheting tension that develops.

From the opening few frames to the closing whistle, it’s nearly impossible to watch this teaser trailer without a giant grin on your face. Tarantino (unsurprisingly) proved he could handle the Western genre with Django Unchained, and now he moves firmly into John Ford territory with this expansive yet intimate tale of rapscallion strangers forced together. The dialogue is snappy, the performances are highly promising, and Tarantino’s 65mm lensing is gorgeous. What a wonderful Christmas gift this will be!

The film will be released exclusively in 70mm on December 25th, followed by a wide release on January 8th. The Western stars Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Demian Bichir, Bruce Dern, and Channing Tatum.

It's damn good seeing Jennifer Jason Leigh back in a major movie after a few quiet years doing the odd TV role and indy film. She'll doubtless be keeping her clothes on these days though, which is probably for the best at 53.
